IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given pie chart and a table show results of a survey of library users at a university. The pie chart indicates categories of users, and table represents their satisfaction rates.
Overall, the full-time undergraduates use library the most. The percentage use of library services decline significantly afterwards. People are generally satisfied with library services. Helpfulness of staff receives the most satisfactory results.
As shown in the pie chart, full-time undergraduates use library 44% of the time. The second most popluar category is of full-time postgraduates. They account for 25%. Part-time postgraduates come third, these users account for only 16%. Distant learners and academic staff use library the least. The account for 8% and 7% respectively.
As for satisfaction rates, helpfulness by staff receives the most positive results, with around 95% satisfaction rate. The library opening hours also received a good feedback, as 65% of the users are very satisfied, and 35% are fairly satisfied. Users are generally satisfied with availability of books. 50% of them are very satisfied, but 10% are not satisfied. Around 20% of the users are not satisfied with availability of journals, and only 45% of users are fully satisfied. Same is the case with reliabilty of wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response selects the main features and reports the user-category figures accurately: full-time undergraduates are the largest group at 44%, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%, while academic staff are the smallest at 7%. It also gives a clear overview of the strongest satisfaction result (staff helpfulness) and the generally positive picture. Most satisfaction figures are represented correctly, including opening hours and book availability. However, the overview’s claim that library use “decline[s] significantly afterwards” is vague and does not clearly describe the category proportions. The final comparison of wi-fi is also underdeveloped: it says “Same is the case” with journals, although wi-fi has a different profile, with 48% very satisfied and 19% not satisfied. More precise comparisons across the satisfaction categories would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, user-category details, and satisfaction details. This gives the information a logical progression, and signposts such as “As shown in the pie chart” and “As for satisfaction rates” help the reader follow the shift between visuals. The main comparisons are grouped appropriately, and the overview identifies the largest user group and the strongest satisfaction result. Some links are less effective or repetitive, however. “Same is the case with reliability of wi-fi” does not specify which aspect is similar, and the preceding sentence shifts from journals to wi-fi without explaining the comparison. Use explicit links such as “Similarly, wi-fi satisfaction was mixed, with…” and connect each figure to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for describing the charts, with useful terms such as “account for,” “satisfaction rates,” “positive results,” and “availability.” The writer also varies some expressions rather than repeating “percentage” throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or informal for an academic report: “use library 44% of the time” suggests frequency rather than the share of users, and “received a good feedback” is not a natural collocation. “Distant learners” is less accurate than the chart’s “distance learning” category, while “fully satisfied” is less consistent than “very satisfied,” the table’s label. Spelling slips in “popluar” and “reliabilty” also limit accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, including “As shown in the pie chart…” and the contrast in “50% of them are very satisfied, but 10% are not satisfied.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and the figures remain clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, sentence boundaries, and agreement. For example, “and table represents” needs an article, and “Part-time postgraduates come third, these users account for only 16%” joins two independent clauses with a comma. “The account for 8% and 7% respectively” also has an unclear subject and incorrect agreement. Improve control by checking articles and subjects, and by joining clauses with a conjunction or separating them into sentences.
