IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart depicts different categories of users of library at the university, whereas the chart illustrates the satisfaction level of the users taking five aspects of the library.
Overall, Full-time undergraduate accounted for the largest proportion of the library user, while academic staff represented the smallest group. In terms of satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff received the most positive feedback, whilst the availability of journals and reliability of wifi attracted lower levels of feedback.
Looking at the categories of library users, full-time undergraduates made up 44% of the total, making them the most dominant group. Full-time postgraduate constitutes of 25% following by part-time postgraduates at 16%. Meanwhile, distance learners accounted for 8% and academic staff represented the smallest share at 7 %.
Turning to the users satisfaction level of library, 95% of the respondents were very satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff & remaining 5% was fairly satisfied. Library opening hours also received favourable rating with 65% very satisfied and 355 were fairly satisfied. Regarding the availability of books half of the users were very satisfied, 40% were fairly satisfied & 10% of users were not satisfied at all. By comparison with 45% were very satisfied with availability of journals & 20% showed dissatisfaction.. Wifi reliability received almost similar response with 48% of satisfaction and 19% were not satisfied at alll.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview: undergraduates are identified as the largest user group, academic staff as the smallest, and staff helpfulness as the strongest satisfaction result. It also selects relevant figures to support these points. Most data are reported accurately, including the user-category shares and the satisfaction figures for books and staff helpfulness. However, there are a few inaccuracies or omissions: “355” for fairly satisfied users of opening hours should be 35%, and the discussion of journals and Wi-Fi leaves out the fairly satisfied proportions (35% and 33%). The overview’s claim that journals and Wi-Fi attracted lower feedback is broadly supported, but could be more precise by identifying journals as the least positively rated overall. These limitations keep the summary from being fully precise and comprehensive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information is organised clearly into an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the two visuals. The progression from user categories to satisfaction results is logical, and signposting such as “Overall,” “Looking at,” and “Turning to” helps readers follow the comparison. The response also groups related figures together rather than listing them randomly. Some linking is less smooth in the final paragraph: “By comparison with 45%...” is an incomplete construction, and the transition to Wi-Fi does not clearly explain the comparison. The repeated use of “Meanwhile” and “Regarding” is not excessive, but more varied, precise links between the satisfaction categories would make cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “dominant group,” “represented the smallest share,” “favourable rating,” and “dissatisfaction.” These choices allow the main comparisons to be expressed clearly, and some less common phrasing shows an effort to vary the language. However, several collocations and word forms are inaccurate or awkward, such as “categories of users of library,” “constitutes of,” and “received favourable rating.” “Wifi” is also better written consistently as “Wi-Fi,” while “at all” is misspelled as “al” at the end. These slips do not prevent understanding, but more natural collocations and careful proofreading would make the vocabulary more precise and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “whereas the chart illustrates...” and the overview sentence beginning “while.” However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Full-time postgraduate constitutes” does not agree with the plural category, and “the largest proportion of the library user” has an incorrect singular form. The sentence “By comparison with 45% were very satisfied...” is structurally incomplete, while “remaining 5% was fairly satisfied” has an agreement problem. Punctuation is also inconsistent, including a double full stop after “dissatisfaction.” Aim to produce more accurate basic clauses before adding complex comparisons, and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
