IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart and table represents two types of information. The chart shows categories of library users and the table shows satisfaction percentage of library users. The library users categories are: Academic staff (7 percent), Full-time undergraduates(44 percent), Full-time postgraduates(24 percent), Part-time postgraduates(16 percent) and Distance learning(8 percent).
There are 65 perecent users who are strongly satisfied from the library opening hours but 35 percent fairly satisfied. There are 95 percent people who are strongly satisfied from the help of the library staff but 5 percent fairly satisfied. There are 50 percent users who are strongly satisfied from the availability of the books and the 40 percent users are fairly satisfied. The 10 percent is not satisfied with availability of the books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify both visuals and report several figures accurately, including the largest user group (44% full-time undergraduates) and satisfaction with opening hours, staff, and books. However, the response is incomplete: it omits satisfaction results for journals and Wi-Fi, and gives no clear overview of the main patterns, such as staff helpfulness receiving the strongest satisfaction or journals having the highest dissatisfaction. The postgraduate figure is also reported as 24% rather than 25%. At 121 words, the response is 29 words below the required minimum, which contributes to the limited coverage. Add an overview and include the most important comparisons across all satisfaction categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, understandable sequence: it first introduces the chart and table and lists user categories, then reports satisfaction figures. This gives the reader a general sense of the two parts of the task. However, the information is not developed into a clear overall progression, and the satisfaction section stops after the results for books. Repeated sentence openings such as “There are 65 percent” and “There are 95 percent” make the reporting mechanical. Use separate paragraphs for the user profile and satisfaction findings, and connect the latter through comparisons—for example, contrast staff helpfulness with journal availability. An overview paragraph would also help organise the main features before the details.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “categories,” “satisfaction,” “availability,” and “fairly satisfied.” The wording is generally understandable, but the range is limited and some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, such as “strongly satisfied from” and “people who are strongly satisfied from the help.” “Users” or “respondents” would be more suitable than “people” in this survey context, while “very satisfied with” is the appropriate collocation. There is also a spelling error in “perecent.” Aim to vary reporting language with terms such as “accounted for,” “rated,” and “dissatisfied,” while keeping the wording precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Most sentences convey their intended meaning, and you attempt both a compound opening and longer reporting sentences. However, the structures are mostly simple and repetitive, with limited variety in how comparisons are expressed. There are errors in agreement and sentence construction: “The chart and table represents” should use a plural verb, and “The 10 percent is not satisfied” does not form a natural grammatical sentence for describing a proportion. The list also needs consistent spacing and plural forms, as in “undergraduates (44 percent).” Practise accurate comparative structures and clauses, such as “while” or “whereas” sentences, and check subject–verb agreement and article use during revision.
