IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart presents five categories of library users at a university and the data table shows their satisfaction level about five aspects of the library.
Overall, according to pie chart, full-time undergraduate students use library the most, while academic staff are the least users of library. It is shown in the data table that majority of the library users are highly satisfied with the library opening hours and helfulness of staff, whilst some of the people are not satisfied with the availability of books and journals and wi-fi reliability.
The pie chart shows that 44% of the library users are full-time undergraduates, the maximum percentage out of the 5 categories. one-quarter of the users reprents full-time postgraduates, while 16% of the users are part-time postgraduates. Distance learning and academic categories are almost the same size, with 8% and 7%, respectively.
According to the data table, most of the users are very satisfied with the library opening hours and staff-helpfulness as indicated by 65% and 95% of the users being in very satisfied column, respectively. In contrast, 10%, 20% and 19% of the users are not satisfied with the availability of books and journals and reliability of wi-fi, respectively, however, 50%, 45% and 48% of the people are very satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and satisfaction is strongest for opening hours and staff helpfulness. The figures for the user categories are accurately reported, as are the key satisfaction results. This supports a well-focused summary with relevant comparisons. However, the final sentence compresses several results into a difficult comparison and omits the fairly satisfied figures for the service areas; the table’s contrast between books, journals and wi-fi could be explained more clearly. For a stronger response, select and group the satisfaction data more precisely, while retaining the accurate overview and avoiding broad wording such as “some of the people.”
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The organisation is clear and appropriate: an introduction is followed by an overview, then separate paragraphs describing the pie chart and table. This gives the reader a logical progression through both visuals, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “while” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. The main weakness is that the final sentence places several figures and categories together, making the comparison less easy to follow. The transition “however” is also awkwardly attached after “respectively,” where the relationship between the two sets of figures is not fully clear. Use shorter, more focused comparisons and make each contrast explicit; this would preserve the sound paragraph structure while making cohesion more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the visuals, with useful terms such as “categories,” “percentage,” “satisfied” and “reliability.” There is some variety in how the data are introduced, including “presents,” “shows” and “indicated by.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “use library the most,” “maximum percentage,” “staff-helpfulness” and “almost the same size.” The spelling errors “helfulness” and “reprents” also reduce accuracy. These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard chart-description phrases such as “account for the largest share,” “the highest proportion” and “staff helpfulness,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while” and “as,” and most meanings remain clear. Some grammatical errors are present, particularly with articles and sentence construction: “according to pie chart” needs an article, and “use library the most” lacks natural grammatical framing. The sentence beginning “In contrast, 10%, 20% and 19%...” is also overloaded, with “however” joining ideas in a way that makes the structure difficult to control. Capitalisation after a full stop is inconsistent in “one-quarter.” Review articles and build the final comparison as two complete, balanced sentences. Greater control of these patterns would make the range of structures more accurate.
