IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and table, gives information on the category of library users and their level of satisfaction at a particular university.
Overall, mostly full-time students used the library compared to staff, part-time and distant learning students. For how satisfied these library users are, we have more users being very satisfied especially in the functional aspects of the library than structural aspects.
Full-time undergraduates and post graduate students form 69% of the entire library users while part-time postgraduates, distance learning students and academic staff form 31% which suggests they didn't use the library as much.
100% users were very satisfied with the functional aspect of the library which involves the time the library opens and how helpful library staff are. 10% users were not satisfied with the availability of books as well as an additional 10% who were not satisfied with the journals available at the library.
Wifi reliability had most users with fairly stable satisfaction rate as 48% were very satisfied, 33% were not so satisfied and 19% were not satisfied at all.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main user group and provide a useful overview of satisfaction, then support these points with several figures. The calculation that full-time undergraduates and postgraduates make up 69% is accurate, as is the 31% total for the other categories. However, some key details are misreported: 10% were dissatisfied with books and 20% with journals, rather than an additional 10% for journals. For wi-fi, 33% were fairly satisfied and 19% not satisfied; the response labels 33% as “not so satisfied” and then repeats “not satisfied” for 19%. The claim that 100% were very satisfied with functional aspects also overlooks that 35% were only fairly satisfied with opening hours and 5% with staff helpfulness. More precise reporting and clearer coverage of the satisfaction results would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs giving user proportions and satisfaction details. The progression from the user categories to satisfaction is easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “For how satisfied” signal the shift in focus. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some effective paragraphing. However, connections between claims and figures are not always clear. In the final paragraph, the two descriptions of wi-fi satisfaction conflict because 33% is described as “not so satisfied” and 19% as “not satisfied at all.” The contrast between “functional” and “structural” aspects is also not explained. Use more precise linking and make each comparison explicit so the reader can follow the data without having to infer your meaning.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the charts, including “form,” “entire,” “availability,” and “reliability.” These choices help convey the main categories and satisfaction measures. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “not so satisfied” and “not satisfied at all.” However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for this data: “distant learning” should be “distance learning,” and “functional” versus “structural aspects” does not clearly describe the measures shown. “Fairly stable satisfaction rate” is also an awkward description of a percentage category. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Prefer the table’s exact labels, such as “fairly satisfied,” and use straightforward terms like “services” or “facilities” only when they accurately describe the items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which involves the time the library opens” and the comparison introduced by “while.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. In the opening sentence, the comma after “table” incorrectly separates the subject from “gives”; write “The pie chart and table give information…”. “Full-time undergraduates and post graduate students form” also needs consistent noun form and spelling, for example “full-time undergraduates and postgraduates account for.” In “100% users,” an article is needed (“100% of users”), and “Wifi” is conventionally written “Wi-Fi.” Review agreement, articles, and punctuation while retaining your attempts at longer sentence structures.
