IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The illustrated bar chart represents different categories of users availing services of library at a university and the table below it shows result of a survey conducted on these users to find out how much satisfied they are with services provided by library. From the barchart we can see that most of the library users are full time undergraduate students with 44% ratio, 25% are full time postgraduate students, 16% are part time postgraduate students, 8% are distance learners and 7% users are academic staff. The figures in survey show that 65% people are fully satisfied with library opening hours and 35% are fairly satisfied. About helper staff of library, 95% of users are very satisfied from them with only 5% users fairly satisfied. On the availbility of resources such as books and journals 45 to 50% users are fully satisfied, 35 to 40% are partially satisfied whereas 10 to 20% are unsatisfied. Realiability of WiFi also needs little improvement as stats show that around 30 to 50% users are satisfied with it 19% of them are not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You cover both visuals and report the main user groups accurately, including the largest group, full-time undergraduates at 44%, and the smallest, academic staff at 7%. You also identify strong satisfaction with staff and opening hours, and lower satisfaction with books, journals and Wi-Fi. However, the response is largely a sequence of figures rather than a clear overview of the most important patterns. The statement that Wi-Fi “needs little improvement” is an interpretation rather than a neutral summary, and “around 30 to 50% users are satisfied” is too broad: the table separates very satisfied (48%) from fairly satisfied (33%). A concise overview comparing the strongest and weakest results, followed by more precise reporting, would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response follows a generally sensible order: it first describes the user categories and then moves through satisfaction with library services. Linking phrases such as “From the barchart” and “The figures in survey show” help signal these shifts. However, the information is presented as one long paragraph, so the two visuals and the key comparisons are not clearly separated. Several details are compressed into broad ranges, particularly the satisfaction figures for books and journals, which makes the progression less precise. Organise the response into an introduction, a brief overview, and separate detail paragraphs for the chart and table. Use clear comparisons between services rather than moving from one item to the next as a list.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “categories,” “survey,” “satisfied,” “availability,” and “reliability,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range and precision are limited by awkward or inaccurate expressions such as “users availing services,” “fully satisfied from them,” and “partially satisfied.” Some wording is also informal or imprecise for an academic report, such as “helper staff” and “stats.” Spelling errors in “availbility” and “Realiability” further reduce accuracy. Choose standard collocations and use the table’s categories consistently: for example, “very satisfied,” “fairly satisfied,” and “not satisfied.” This would make the description more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt some longer sentences, including the opening sentence that introduces both visuals, and most of the information can be understood. However, sentence structures are often awkward or incomplete in their grammatical patterns. For example, “how much satisfied they are” needs a different construction, while “95% of users are very satisfied from them” uses an incorrect preposition. The phrase “with only 5% users fairly satisfied” also needs a clearer grammatical link, such as “with only 5% being fairly satisfied.” Articles and noun phrases are sometimes missing or unnatural, as in “services of library.” Use shorter, controlled sentences when reporting figures, then check articles, prepositions, and clause structure.
