Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table give information about the types of library users and their satisfactory level during a survey at a university.

Overall, full-time undergraduate accounted for the largest proportion in the pie chart, while academic staff represented the smallest share. In the table, most of the library users were very satisfied with the helping behaviour of staff than that for journal's availability.

In the pie chart, Full-time undergraduates represented 44%, making it the largest category of library users. This was followed by full-time postgraduate students, which showed 25%. Meanwhile, part time post graduate made up 16%, while distance learning and academic staff showed the smallest share of 8% and 7%, respectively.

In the table, 95% library users were very satisfied with helpfulness of staff and 65% with opening hours. However, about 19 and 20% users were not satisfied with wi-fi connections and availability of journals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main user group accurately: full-time undergraduates make up the largest share (44%), while academic staff are the smallest (7%). You also report several key satisfaction figures correctly, including staff helpfulness (95% very satisfied) and the dissatisfied proportions for wi-fi and journals. However, the overview is incomplete: it compares staff helpfulness with journal availability but does not summarise the broader pattern, such as the high satisfaction with opening hours or the relatively mixed ratings for books, journals and wi-fi. Several table categories are omitted, and the response is 3 words below the required minimum. Add a concise overview of the main satisfaction trends and include a few more relevant comparisons to develop the report fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the pie chart and table. This makes the two sources easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “However” help signal relationships. The progression is generally logical, but the table paragraph is very brief and reports only a few figures, so the coverage feels uneven compared with the more detailed pie-chart paragraph. Some comparisons are also compressed into the overview rather than developed clearly. To strengthen the organisation, group the satisfaction results into positive ratings and areas of lower satisfaction, then use explicit comparisons to guide the reader through those patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “largest proportion,” “smallest share,” “represented,” and “availability.” These choices help communicate the main figures, and the meaning remains clear. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “their satisfactory level,” “helping behaviour of staff,” and “journal's availability.” There is also inconsistent spelling and form in “part time post graduate,” while “showed” is repeated for different categories. Aim for precise, natural chart language and consistent compound forms. For example, use “level of satisfaction,” “helpfulness of staff,” and “availability of journals,” and vary reporting verbs with “accounted for” or “stood at.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “while academic staff represented the smallest share” and the comparison introduced by “However.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following the report. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with articles, agreement and plural forms: “Full-time undergraduate accounted” needs a plural noun or a singular construction, and “95% library users” requires “of.” The phrase “most of the library users were very satisfied … than” also combines a superlative idea with an incorrect comparative structure. Check sentence patterns and noun forms carefully, and use a direct construction such as “The highest satisfaction was recorded for staff helpfulness.”
