IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given pie chart illustrates the results of a survey in terms of proportion of library used by various category people and the table shows the percetange of satisfaction about library services at a university.
Overall, it can be seen that full-time undergraduates were the highest users while other category users recorded about half of total users. Most of the users are satisfied with the library services except two types of services.
The pie chart shows that 44% of users are full-time undergraduates, making it the highest proportion of the users. Full-time postgraduates were the second highest visitors to the library recorded at 25%, which was nearly half of the full-time undergraduates. Remaining proportion were accounted at combined percentage of 31% with part-time postgraduate, distance learing students and academic staff.
According to the table, satisfaction for helpfullness of staff accounted at 95% for very satisfied and 5% for fairly satisfied. The percentages for library opening hours and availability of books recorded 65% and 50% for very satisfaction and 35% and 40% for fairly satisfaction respectively. Availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi were the least satisfactory services for users, recorded below 50% of very satisfied and below 40% for fairly satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main user group accurately (full-time undergraduates, at 44%) and note that full-time postgraduates are second at 25%. The overview also recognises generally positive satisfaction, and your comparisons of staff helpfulness and opening hours are supported by the figures. This meets the task well, with some features reported clearly. However, the overview’s claim that “other category users recorded about half of total users” is unclear: the remaining groups together make up 56%, not about half, and their individual shares are not given. The table discussion also omits the exact figures for journals and wi-fi, and “least satisfactory” could be made more precise by identifying journals as the lowest for very satisfied and highest for not satisfied. More precise selection and development of these comparisons would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a logical route through the two visuals. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “The pie chart shows,” and “According to the table” help signal the purpose of each section, and the comparisons within the final paragraph are easy to follow. To make the progression more effective, connect the overview more directly to the detailed figures and avoid the vague reference to “two types of services,” since the response later discusses several service categories. You could also group the satisfaction results by stronger and weaker ratings, which would make the table paragraph’s internal organisation more purposeful.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction,” “highest users,” and “least satisfactory,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or awkward choices that limit precision. “Library used by various category people” is not a natural description of the chart, while “recorded at” and “accounted at” are repeatedly used where “stood at” or “accounted for” would fit better. Spelling errors such as “percetange,” “learing,” and “helpfullness” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, conventional chart language and check spelling carefully; this will help you express comparisons more naturally without relying on repeated phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex overview beginning “Overall, it can be seen that…” and a sentence comparing opening hours with book availability. Most sentences communicate their intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Remaining proportion were accounted at combined percentage” has problems with the article, agreement, and sentence construction; “satisfaction for helpfulness of staff accounted at 95%” also uses an incomplete grammatical pattern. In “full-time postgraduates were the second highest visitors … recorded at 25%,” the modifier is awkwardly attached. Practise accurate structures such as “The remaining groups accounted for 31% in total” and “95% were very satisfied with staff helpfulness.” Greater control of these patterns would improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
