IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table illustrate the categories of library users and their satisfaction with library. Units are measured in percentage.

Overall, the full time undergraduate occupies the biggest space while the lowest users are the academic staffs . On the other hand, the table shows that library users are most satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff. But some people are not satisfied with the availability of journals, books and reliability of wifi.

The pie chart shows that largest group of library users are the full time graduates occupying 44% space of the pie chart while the lowest users are the academic staffs with a percentage of 7%. Additionally, the table depicts that the library users found the most satisfaction in the helpfulness of the staff and that is 95% and the library opening hours occupy the second position. 65% people are very satisfied with library opening hours. Users have 0% dissatisfaction with both helpfulness of the staff and library opening hours.

Furthermore, the pie chart also shows the second highest library users are the full time postgraduate occupying 25% space of the pie chart. The number of distant learners and part time postgraduates are 8% and 16% respectively. In contrast we can see from the table that in case of satisfaction, availability of books are in third position. 50% people are very satisfied with it while 10% people are dissatisfied. Number of satisfaction with availability of journals and reliability of wifi are 45% and 48% respectively with a dissatisfaction level of 20% and 19%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main user group (full-time undergraduates, 44%) and the smallest (academic staff, 7%), and you highlight the strongest satisfaction result: staff helpfulness at 95%, with no dissatisfaction for this or opening hours. You also report several relevant figures for books, journals and Wi-Fi. However, the overview is only partly developed: it could more clearly summarise that satisfaction is generally high, while journals and Wi-Fi attract the largest dissatisfied shares. There is also a factual label error: the 44% group is full-time undergraduates, not “full time graduates.” The table comparisons are somewhat selective, and the statement that books are in “third position” is unclear because the table has several different satisfaction measures. More precise, consistently labelled comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that cover the chart and table. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” “Furthermore” and “In contrast” help readers follow the shift between information. This coherent structure meets the core expectations, and the main points are generally easy to locate. However, some linking is mechanical, and the final paragraph moves between user categories and satisfaction data without a particularly clear comparison framework. References such as “that” in “and that is 95%” are slightly imprecise, while repeated references to “the pie chart” and “the table” make the flow less flexible. Grouping the table results by satisfaction level or by service would create clearer progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “categories,” “dissatisfaction,” “helpfulness” and “availability,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary descriptions, such as “largest group” and “second highest.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “occupying 44% space,” “found the most satisfaction,” and “occupy the second position” do not express the comparisons naturally. “Full time graduates” also mislabels the undergraduate group, and “distant learners” is not the appropriate term for distance-learning users. Repeated use of “people” and “users” limits precision. Choose standard chart-reporting phrases and keep category labels faithful to the source.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “that” and “in case of,” and most sentences communicate the intended information. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “the full time undergraduate occupies the biggest space” has an awkward singular construction, and “the largest group … are” shows a subject–verb agreement problem. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in “satisfaction with library” and “the academic staffs.” The sentence beginning “Number of satisfaction…” is not well formed and would be clearer as a direct comparison, such as “Very-satisfaction figures for journals and Wi-Fi were 45% and 48%, respectively.” Check agreement, articles and sentence structure during revision.
