Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the proportion of satisfied library users at a university in result of a survey. The survey contains three categories namely very satisfied, fairly satisfied and not satisfied. The pie chart gives information on proportion of five categories of library users (Full-time graduate, Full-time postgraduate, Part-time postgraduate, Distance learning and Academic staff).

Overall, full-time graduates account for most users of library while the academic staff is the least. The helpfulness of staff is the category almost all user are satisfied with. In contrast availability of journals and WiFi reliability needs improvement. Almost half of people surveyed are satisfied with all the services.

In regards to pie chart, students are the large proportion of library users which is Full-time undergraduate (44%), full-time postgraduates (25%), and part-time postgraduates (16%) respectively. Whereas the least number accounts for distance learning and academic staff which is 8% and 7%.

In terms of table, the satisfaction survey shows the library opening hours and helpfulness of staff are two categories which user are completely satisfies having zero unsatisfied users, The remaining three categories have almost 50% are satisfied while 10, 20 and 19 are not satisfied with availability of books, journal and WiFi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visuals and identify several important features: undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. The figures for the user categories and the unsatisfied proportions for books, journals and Wi-Fi are accurately reported. However, the overview includes an unsupported claim that “Almost half of people surveyed are satisfied with all the services”; the table gives separate ratings for each service, not an overall satisfaction figure. Also, opening hours are described as having zero unsatisfied users, but the response does not report the notable 65% very satisfied result. Develop the comparisons across all five services more precisely, including the lower satisfaction for journals and Wi-Fi.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the pie chart and table. This makes the two visuals easy to distinguish, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In regards to” and “In terms of” help signal the progression. The organisation is coherent, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In contrast availability of journals and WiFi reliability needs improvement” does not clearly explain the contrast with staff helpfulness, and the final sentence joins several comparisons in a way that is difficult to follow. The overview also moves from user categories to satisfaction without a smooth link. Use more precise transitions and divide the final comparison into clearer units to make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “account for,” “satisfaction survey,” and “unsatisfied,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “In terms of table.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “in result of a survey,” “the category almost all user are satisfied with,” and “students are the large proportion” do not sound natural. “Full-time graduate” also mislabels the largest group, which is undergraduate. Use standard chart language and check that category names match the visual exactly. More precise terms for satisfaction levels and comparisons would improve clarity and control without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “Whereas” and a sentence beginning “In terms of table.” The main information is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “the academic staff is the least,” “almost all user are satisfied,” and “categories which user are completely satisfies,” where agreement and sentence structure are faulty. The final sentence also lacks clear punctuation between the clauses and figures. Articles and plural forms need attention, as in “the library opening hours” and “10, 20 and 19 are not satisfied.” Aim to build accurate sentences around each comparison, checking subject–verb agreement and ensuring that each clause has a clear subject and verb.
