Student answer (Band 4.5)

The pie chart illustrates the results of a research conducted on readers in the library at a university. There are about half number of those individuals who are full-time undergraduates and other half include Full-time postgraduate, Part-time postgraduate, Distance learning students and Academic staff respectively. Other data shows that maximum number of pupils are satisfied with helpfulness of staff and about half are satisfied with availability of books, journals and wif

approximately half of them are full-time postgraduates. The part-time postgraduates are almost half of full-time postgraduates. Subsequently, there are distance learning students make up half of the percentage of part-time postgraduate while Academic staff percentage is slightly lower than that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies the largest user group, full-time undergraduates, and notes that staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. However, it only minimally covers the task: the overview is unclear, and several comparisons are inaccurate or incomplete. For example, “about half” of users are undergraduates, but the remaining groups together make up 56%, not roughly the same share. The claim that part-time postgraduates are “almost half” of full-time postgraduates is also imprecise (16% versus 25%), while distance learners are 8%, not half of 16%. The satisfaction summary omits opening hours and misstates the pattern for journals and wi-fi. The response is 40 words below the required minimum; develop a clear overview and report the key figures accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some attempt to group information: the response first refers to user categories and then turns to satisfaction, using phrases such as “Other data shows” and “Subsequently.” However, the ideas do not progress in a clear order. The sentence beginning “There are about half number…” combines several categories without explaining their proportions, and the later return to full-time postgraduates disrupts the sequence. The text also appears to break off at “wif” before continuing, which makes the connection between the satisfaction point and the user-category details difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for the chart and table, and organise each from the main overview to selected comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “full-time undergraduates,” “part-time postgraduate,” “satisfied,” and “percentage,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “research conducted on readers,” “pupils,” and “maximum number.” “Readers” also does not accurately describe all categories of library users. The phrase “about half number” is not a natural way to express a proportion, and “other data shows” is vague. Aim for precise chart language and vary expressions for proportions and satisfaction, while checking that each term matches the information shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts longer sentence forms, including “There are about half number of those individuals who are…” and “there are distance learning students make up…,” but these constructions are often faulty and make relationships between ideas unclear. There are problems with articles and noun phrases in “about half number,” and the clause after “Subsequently” lacks a correct structure: use, for example, “Distance-learning students make up…” rather than combining “there are” with “make up.” The opening also needs “a study” rather than “a research.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation should be checked, particularly around the abrupt transition at “wif.” Build accuracy with clear subject–verb sentences before adding complex clauses.
