IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates five different categories of library users and the table provides information about the satisfaction levels of them at a university.
Overall, the University library was largely used by full-time undergraduate students while distance learners and academic staffs accounted for a lower proportion. In addition, no dissatisfaction had recorded during the library opening hours and the behavior of the staffs, whereas the level of dissatisfaction was highest due to the availability of journals.
To begin with, the library was mostly occupied by the full-time undergraduate (44%) and postgraduate (25%) students. Postgraduate students who were part-timers used the library at 16%. The difference between the percentage of distance learning which includes all courses and academic staffs was only 1%.
Regarding the remaining data, the largest proportion of satisfaction was recorder in library opening hours where 65% users were very satisfied followed by 35% fairly satisfied people and the helpful nature of staffs accounted for 95%, only 5% were fairly satisfied. In contrast, 20% users were not satisfied with the availability of journals and 19% of them found wi-fi connection unreliable. In terms of books, 50% people showed higher level of satisfaction while 10% were opposite.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview: undergraduates form the largest user group, while academic staff and distance learners are the smallest, and journal satisfaction is comparatively weak. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 44%, 25% and 16% user shares and the 20% dissatisfied with journals. The comparison that distance learners and academic staff differ by one percentage point is also correct. To make the account more fully developed, include the remaining user shares (7% and 8%) explicitly and compare satisfaction across more categories, such as the 95% very satisfied with staff help against the 50% for books. The claim that there was “no dissatisfaction” for staff behaviour is broadly supported by the table, but “staff helpfulness” is more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to user categories and then satisfaction results. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “To begin with” and “In contrast” help signal shifts. This coherent organisation is a strength. However, some links are mechanical or imprecise: “Regarding the remaining data” does not clearly identify the satisfaction table, and “the largest proportion of satisfaction was recorder in library opening hours” makes the comparison difficult to process. The final paragraph also moves quickly between several satisfaction categories without a consistent comparison pattern. Use clearer topic sentences and group the strongest satisfaction results separately from the weaker ones to make progression more flexible and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
There is adequate vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “dissatisfaction,” and “unreliable.” These choices allow the main comparisons to be understood, and the response attempts some less common phrasing. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “library was mostly occupied by” suggests physical occupancy rather than user share, “the largest proportion of satisfaction was recorder” is not idiomatic, and “the behavior of the staffs” does not accurately describe helpfulness. “Academic staffs” and “fairly satisfied people” are also unsuitable forms for this context. More precise chart language and careful use of collocations would improve flexibility and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “distance learning which includes all courses” and contrastive structures such as “whereas” and “while.” Meaning is generally clear, and some sentences are controlled well. There are nevertheless some grammatical errors. For example, “no dissatisfaction had recorded” needs a passive form (“was recorded”), while “the library was mostly occupied by the full-time undergraduate” has an article and number problem. The sentence beginning “the largest proportion of satisfaction was recorder” also has an incorrect verb form, and “50% people” needs “of the people/users.” Review passive constructions, articles, plural forms, and percentage patterns; these corrections would make the varied sentence structures more accurate.
