IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates proportions of sections of library users and the table displays satisfaction of users at a certain higher institution of learning.
Overall, the highest number of library users are of full-time undergraduates, followed by full-time post graduates, with lowest proportion coming from the academic staff.
In detail, 44% of the library users are full-time students and it is the highest percentage. This sector is followed by full-time postgraduates with a percentage of 25%. The third highest number of library users are part-time postgraduates at 16%, with distance learners on the fourth position contributing 8%. The least proportion of users comes from academic staff at 7%.
All the library users are satisfied with the opening hours and the helpfulness of the staff, although only 65% are very satisfied with the opening ours. 95% of the users are very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff and it is the highest. Most leaners are not happy with availability of jounals with 20% not satisfied and the trend is almost the same to the reliability of wi-fi since 19% of users are not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main user group and give a clear overview of the ranking: full-time undergraduates are the largest group, while academic staff are the smallest. The figures for all five categories are accurately reported. You also select relevant satisfaction results, including the high ratings for staff helpfulness and the greater dissatisfaction with journals and wi-fi. However, the overview is limited mainly to user categories, and the satisfaction data are not compared as fully: for example, books receive 50% very satisfied and 10% not satisfied, while journals have the highest dissatisfaction at 20%. Also, “All the library users are satisfied” is too broad; the table shows some users are not satisfied with books, journals and wi-fi. A fuller overview of both visuals and more precise comparisons would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and the information generally progresses from user categories to satisfaction. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “In detail,” and “The third highest” help readers follow the figures. The final paragraph also groups related satisfaction findings. Some connections could be clearer, however: “the trend is almost the same” does not specify exactly how wi-fi compares with journals, and the paragraph moves from opening hours to staff helpfulness and then to journals and wi-fi without covering books. Use clearer comparison links and group the satisfaction results more systematically—for example, contrast the two strongest ratings with the areas where dissatisfaction is higher. This would make the progression more complete and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportions,” “satisfaction,” “contributing,” and “not satisfied,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expressions for ranking, such as “highest percentage” and “least proportion.” Some choices are inaccurate or awkward for describing charts: “sections of library users” is not a natural way to describe categories, and “on the fourth position” is an unsuitable collocation. “Higher institution of learning” is unnecessarily elaborate, while “learners” is less precise than “users” in this context. There are spelling errors in “ours” and “jounals.” Choose concise, conventional chart language and check spelling; this would improve precision and control while retaining your useful range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences communicate the data clearly, such as “The third highest number of library users are part-time postgraduates at 16%.” The opening sentence also combines the chart and table in a complex structure. Some grammatical errors remain, though they rarely prevent understanding. In “the highest number of library users are,” the subject and verb do not agree; “the highest proportion … is” would be more accurate. “This sector is followed by … with a percentage of 25%” is grammatically possible but structurally awkward, and “although only 65% are very satisfied with the opening ours” needs a clearer subject, such as “65% of users are very satisfied.” Aim for accurate agreement and clearer sentence patterns when reporting comparisons.
