Number of shop closures and openings 2011– 2018

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The line graph compares the number of shops that closed and the number of new shops that opened in a particular country between 2011 and 2018. Evidently, the number of shop openings showed a downward trend despite some fluctuations.

In 2011, approximately 8,500 new shops opened, compared with around 6,500 closures. Openings then declined steadily to about 4,000 in 2014 before recovering slightly to 4,500 in 2015. After remaining stable in 2016, the figure fell again, reaching only 3,000 by 2018, the lowest level recorded during the period.

By contrast, shop closures rose from around 6,500 in 2011 to a peak of roughly 7,500 in 2013. The number then dropped dramatically to almost zero in 2015 before rebounding sharply to just over 5,000 in 2016. Closures remained fairly stable at around 5,000 in both 2017 and 2018. Although openings exceeded closures at the beginning of the period, the gap gradually narrowed, and by 2018 the two totals were almost the same.

Overall, the number of shop openings showed a downward trend despite some fluctuations, while the number of closures varied considerably throughout the period. By the end of 2018, both figures were relatively similar, although they had followed different patterns.
