Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the graph, including the overall trends and specific data points for both shop openings and closures. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing figures rather than synthesizing the information effectively. The overview is present but could be more precise; for instance, describing the trends as 'declining' is a bit of an oversimplification given the fluctuations shown. While all parts of the task are addressed, the lack of clear, comparative analysis between the two categories (e.g., noting when closures exceeded openings) limits the depth of the response. The data reporting is generally accurate, though some figures are slightly imprecise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two categories. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Next to that', and 'Overall', but they are sometimes used mechanically or with awkward phrasing. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the transition between sentences within paragraphs can feel disjointed due to grammatical errors. Referencing is mostly clear, but the flow is occasionally interrupted by the repetitive structure of the sentences, which impacts the overall coherence of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'betweeb', 'openng', 'sops', 'mentain', 'nubers', 'contineously', 'slided') that, while not always impeding communication, are distracting and indicate a lack of control. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic verbs like 'starts', 'drops', and 'rose'. To achieve a higher band, you should incorporate more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'plummeted', 'stabilized', or 'a significant downturn'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb forms ('how many shops are being newly opened and how many shuts'), subject-verb agreement errors, and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and sentence boundaries. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and tense consistency would significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
