Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the general subject and attempts to compare years, but it reports several central figures inaccurately, which limits how well it fulfils the task. For example, it says the maximum number of shops opened was in 2013 at over 7,000; the chart shows openings peaked in 2011 at about 8,500. It also describes fewer than 1,000 shops opening in 2015, when that low figure belongs to closures. The 2011 and 2018 figures are also reversed or mislabelled. There is no reliable overview of the main trends, such as the sharp fall in closures in 2015 and the overall decline in openings. Select the key patterns first, then check each figure against its series.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The response makes some attempt to group information by year and uses basic links such as “also” and “but.” However, ideas are not arranged into clear stages, and the long, largely unpunctuated passage makes comparisons difficult to follow. The opening repeats the task rather than establishing an overview, while the final sentence restates that the graph shows differences without adding a clear conclusion. References such as “this” and “these all graph” are also unclear. Organise the report into an introduction, a brief overview, and one or two paragraphs comparing the main figures or trends. Use linking words to show precise contrasts, rather than joining many points in one sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on “number,” “difference,” “graph,” and “shops.” Some task-related terms, including “opened,” “closed,” and “data,” help communicate the topic, but several expressions are imprecise or awkward, such as “both sitution” and “the number of closed and opened.” Spelling errors, including “betwen,” “amximum,” and “differrence,” also reduce clarity and control. Build a small set of accurate chart-description phrases and use them consistently—for example, “shop openings,” “shop closures,” “rose,” “fell sharply,” and “remained relatively stable.” This would make comparisons more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
There is an attempt to form longer sentences and make comparisons, but grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors often make the relationships between figures unclear. The opening, “The graph is illustrate,” has an incorrect verb construction; “how many shops are closed or how many are opened in which year” also shows difficulty forming an indirect question. Agreement and article use are problematic in phrases such as “the minimum shops has been opened,” and tense and sentence boundaries are not controlled consistently. Most ideas are joined into a single run-on passage with little punctuation. Practise accurate simple past forms for completed chart data, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas.” Clear sentence boundaries will help readers understand each comparison.
