Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that primary schools place excessive emphasis on structured, rigid, formal instruction. I completely agree with this view, and I firmly believe that play-based education is a vital component of the learning process, as it improves children's social and motor skills.

There are mainly two indicators that early education focuses more on academic learning than hands-on activities. First, the ratio of classroom sessions to field trips is overwhelmingly high, which means there are fewer opportunities for learners to engage in outdoor activities. For example, in most primary schools, students might participate in only one play-based activity per week compared to daily desk-bound lessons. Furthermore, the bulk of content in standard curricula is designed strictly for traditional classroom delivery. For instance, resources provided to science teachers often consist of theoretical texts rather than step-by-step practical activities that students can directly experiment with.

I strongly believe that play is a crucial element of any primary school strategy. Early education is foundational to acquiring communication skills, and the best way to maximize these developmental opportunities is through monitored group activities where learners collaborate in small clusters. Another benefit of play-based education is that it enhances physical coordination. Because most informal learning settings involve physical movement, engaging in them makes children less prone to developing a sedentary lifestyle as they grow up.

In conclusion, although academic education is important, play-based learning is far more effective in shaping children's developmental behavior. I consider interactive, play-focused instruction to be an indispensable part of early childhood education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas regarding the lack of practical activities and the developmental benefits of play are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the comparison between theoretical science texts and practical experiments. The argument is logical and directly answers the 'to what extent' and 'how important' components of the task. The response is balanced and demonstrates a clear understanding of the requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the critique of current schooling and the benefits of play is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main points of the prompt. The flow is natural, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic context. Phrases like 'excessive emphasis', 'structured, rigid, formal instruction', and 'indispensable part' show a strong command of language. There is a good use of collocations, such as 'foundational to acquiring' and 'prone to developing'. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the topic well, incorporating a few more sophisticated, less common lexical items could elevate the score further. Overall, the word choice is accurate and contributes to a professional tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('Because most informal learning settings involve physical movement, engaging in them makes...') and relative clauses, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of complex ideas. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear and sophisticated, meeting the criteria for a high band score in this category.
