Student answer (Band 7.5)
Some people argue that primary schools place too much emphasis on formal learning. I largely agree with this view because young children need opportunities to develop social, creative and practical skills through play. However, formal education is also important for building a strong academic foundation.
One reason why primary schools may focus too much on formal learning is that children at this age have limited attention spans. Spending long periods studying subjects such as mathematics, science and grammar can make lessons stressful and less enjoyable. In addition, children need to develop skills that cannot always be taught through textbooks. For example, playing games with classmates can help them learn how to communicate, cooperate and solve problems. These skills are useful both at school and later in life.
I believe that play is particularly important in primary education because it allows children to learn naturally. Educational games can make difficult concepts easier to understand and can increase students' motivation. For instance, teachers can use counting games to teach basic mathematics or role-playing activities to improve children's language skills. Physical play is also beneficial because it encourages children to be active and can help them develop teamwork and confidence.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that formal learning should be reduced dramatically. Primary school is the stage when children develop essential abilities such as reading, writing and basic mathematics. Without these skills, they may struggle with more advanced education in the future. Therefore, schools should aim for a balance between academic lessons and enjoyable activities.
In conclusion, I agree that primary schools can sometimes place too much emphasis on formal learning. In my opinion, children should have sufficient time to play as well as study because play supports their social, physical and intellectual development. A balanced approach would provide children with both a strong academic foundation and important life skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding the limitations of formal learning for young children and the benefits of play are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the use of counting games and role-playing. The essay is balanced, acknowledging the necessity of formal education while advocating for a more integrated approach. All parts of the task are covered well, and the ideas are extended logically, meeting the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the critique of formal learning and the necessity of a balanced approach is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'For instance', 'Nevertheless', and 'Therefore'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between ideas is always clear, which demonstrates a high level of control over the structure of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'limited attention spans', 'academic foundation', and 'intellectual development' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it occasionally leans towards common usage rather than more sophisticated or academic collocations. However, there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced or less common lexical items to add further depth to your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('Without these skills, they may struggle...') and relative clauses. The grammar is consistently accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there is a high level of control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. While the structures are solid and reliable, the range could be slightly more adventurous to reach the highest band, but the current level of accuracy is very strong and supports clear communication.
