Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that primary schools are dragging children too much towards formal learning. I completely agree to this point of view. I think that schools should not entirely focus on formal learning in primary classes because children are not mature enough to adapt and memorize the formal type of curriculum.

My stand on this particular topic is that, I think children at primary level are more likely to learn things through different kind of plays and also they can learn the basic things during their time in primary school classroom.

For instance, kids will learn about shapes, numbers, colors and other basic things from bein involved in different extra curricular activities, such as, cartoon plays can be performed in the classroom because kids at this age are more interested in cartoons and they will be able to learn through this.

On the other hand, it is necessary for the children to play and participate in physical activities as well. this will keep the children physically fit and it also encourages them to adapt different sports which they like. Furthermore, this will also keep them away from electronic devices such as mobile phones.

For example, children will develop their interest in football and cricket which will keep their good physical health and also it will encourage them towards learning .

In conclusion, I think primary schools should not completely focus on formal writing instead they should arrange some extra curricular activities for students and also provide them with a structure in which they can play and learn .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: the extent of agreement regarding formal learning and the importance of play. However, the development is somewhat limited. While you provide examples like 'shapes, numbers, colors' and 'football and cricket', the explanation of why these are important remains quite basic. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the cognitive or social benefits of play rather than just listing activities. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 5.5 or 6.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the transition between the idea of 'formal learning' and 'physical activities' could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure lacks the sophisticated linking required for higher bands. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple terms like 'basic things', 'different kind of', and 'good physical health'. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary such as 'extra curricular activities' and 'formal curriculum', but these are used somewhat repetitively. To improve, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I completely agree to this point of view' (should be 'with'), 'different kind of plays' (should be 'kinds of play'), and 'bein involved' (spelling error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing spaces after periods. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. You need to focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage.
