Student answer (Band 8.0)

It is often argued that primary schools place excessive emphasis on formal learning, while children should be given more opportunities to play. I strongly agree with this view because, although academic instruction is essential for establishing fundamental skills, play is equally important for children's social, emotional and cognitive development.

There is no doubt that formal education has a crucial role in primary schools. At this stage, children need to acquire basic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics, which provides the foundation for their future education. Structured lessons also teach students how to concentrate, follow instructions, and complete tasks independently. Without sufficient formal learning, pupils may struggle to develop the academic skills required in secondary schools and beyond. Therefore, a certain amount of classroom-based instruction is clearly necessary.

However, I believe that focusing heavily on formal learning can be counterproductive, particularly for young children. Primary-school pupils generally have relatively short attention spans, and spending most of the school day sitting at desks may make them bored, stressed or less motivated to learn. In contrast play can make education more enjoyable and engaging. For example, teachers can use educational games, role-playing activities and group projects to teach concepts in a way that encourages children to participate actively. Such activities can develop creativity, problem-solving skills and communication abilities, which are difficult to cultivate through traditional lessons alone.

To conclude, I agree that primary schools may place too much emphasis on formal education. Children should also have regular opportunities to play. In my view, the most effective primary education system is the one that combines formal instruction with purposeful play.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses both parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding the necessity of formal learning and the benefits of play are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of 'educational games' and 'role-playing activities'. The ideas are extended logically, providing a balanced view that satisfies the requirements of the task. Your conclusion effectively synthesises the main points, reinforcing your stance that a hybrid approach is optimal. The response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt without any irrelevant information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme: the first body paragraph focuses on the merits of formal education, while the second explores the advantages of play. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast', 'For example', and 'Therefore', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The transition between the necessity of formal learning and the potential drawbacks of over-emphasising it is smooth, demonstrating a high level of control over the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'excessive emphasis', 'counterproductive', 'short attention spans', and 'purposeful play' show a strong command of language. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the vocabulary is used with precision to convey your meaning. While the range is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. However, the current usage is natural and accurate, with no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like reasoning ('Without sufficient formal learning, pupils may struggle...') and participial phrases. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively to maintain interest and clarity. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the few minor slips that might occur are non-systematic. Your ability to construct clear, grammatically sound sentences throughout the text is a strong point.
