Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is widely accepted that primary school is the first stage of formal education. However, modern education is sometimes focused too heavily on examinations, written exercises and repetitive practice. Students may spend most of the day studying while gradually losing their curiosity and enjoyment. Does this really represent effective learning? Should education only take place through blackboards, textbooks and written work? I believe the answer is no.

Many talented and successful people developed their abilities through curiosity, exploration and independent thinking rather than rigid learning alone. Although some may argue that historical figures lived in a different era, I believe that forcing every student to follow the same learning method can limit creativity and individual potential. Therefore, schools should provide students with more flexible ways to learn.

One useful approach is student-led learning. For example, once a month, one or two students could take on the role of the teacher and lead part of a lesson. By explaining a topic to their classmates, students can improve their communication skills and deepen their understanding of the subject. At the same time, teachers can observe how students understand the material and identify areas that need further explanation.

Practical learning is also important, especially in subjects such as chemistry and physics. Instead of only memorising theories, students can conduct experiments, test ideas and solve problems in different ways. This allows them to learn through experience and may increase their motivation.

In conclusion, education should not be limited to one traditional method. Formal learning is necessary, but practical activities, exploration and student participation are equally important for effective learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the two-part prompt successfully. You present a clear position agreeing that primary schools focus too much on formal learning and explaining the importance of play and alternative learning methods. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as student-led learning and practical experiments in subjects like chemistry and physics. Although some points could be explored in even greater depth, the response fully satisfies the requirements of Task Achievement. Your arguments logically flow from the introductory premise to the conclusion, showing a strong understanding of what the task demands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction successfully frames the debate and states your stance, while each body paragraph introduces a distinct sub-theme, such as student-led learning and practical activities. Paragraphing is used appropriately and effectively. Cohesive devices like 'Although', 'Therefore', 'One useful approach', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments without feeling mechanical or overused. Referencing and substitution are handled securely, ensuring that meaning remains clear and transparent from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Words and phrases like 'formal education', 'repetitive practice', 'independent thinking', and 'communication skills' are used accurately. You also attempt less common lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'curiosity and exploration' and 'deepen their understanding'. While the vocabulary does not reach the highest tiers of sophistication, it is precise enough to convey your points clearly and naturally, with no spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses such as 'Although some may argue that historical figures lived in a different era, I believe that...' and 'Instead of only memorising theories, students can conduct experiments...'. You maintain a high proportion of error-free sentences, and your control of grammar and punctuation is consistently reliable. Minor slips are virtually absent, and the grammatical range successfully supports the clarity and sophistication of your arguments throughout the entire response.
