Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's rapidly evolving world, the issue of formal learning in primary school has sparked considerable debate, with opinions divided on whether schools should focus more on formal learning or on play activities as well. Both sides have merit; I am strongly inclined to let children play at school as well, rather than focusing solely on formal learning. This essay will present compelling reasons and real-time examples in support of my perspective.
To begin with, one of the most convincing reasons for some people who argue that school should only focus on studies rather than playing is that they think that today's world is so competitive, and their children have to study hard to get a chance to do better in their lives if they want to be successful in their life. This factor has a significant impact, especially in terms of the high competition for getting admission to colleges after school, as the merits of the institutes are so high these days. As such, this approach not only aligns with practical needs but also reflects sound judgment in addressing the modern challenge of a child's life.
Equally important is the fact that sports and other activities also help in the mental growth of a child, further reinforcing my belief. This becomes even more relevant when considering the overall health of a child, because a sound body keeps a sound mind. If the child is physically active, it will also help him concentrate more in his studies. Also, giving a child some time free from studies will be beneficial, as he can do something he likes, which will make him feel fresh.
In conclusion, although understandably some may take a different view, I firmly believe that
a child should get some free time for physical activity in school for their physical well-being
The reasons discussed, based on logic and evidence, make this position both reasonable and well- substantiated. With clear advantages and measurable impact, this opinion stands as the more convincing and constructive one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the two-part prompt. The writer presents a clear position throughout the essay, stating their support for play activities alongside formal learning in primary schools. In the second body paragraph, the writer acknowledges and explains the opposing view regarding academic competition before returning to their core argument in the third paragraph. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant reasoning, such as physical well-being and concentration, although some arguments remain slightly general rather than deeply explored. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to link ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Equally important', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive or vague (e.g., 'This factor has a significant impact'), and the final sentence of the conclusion cuts off abruptly without proper punctuation, showing some flaws in micro-cohesion. These minor organisational lapses place the essay solidly at Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating phrases like 'rapidly evolving world', 'compelling reasons', and 'mental growth'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some collocations and expressions lean towards colloquial or slightly repetitive phrasing, such as 'do something he likes' or 'feel fresh'. Spelling and word choices are generally accurate and do not impede communication. The lexical range is sufficient for a Band 6.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with effective use of subordinate clauses such as 'while opinions divided on whether...' and 'if the child is physically active...'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, for instance, 'opinions divided on whether schools should focus more on formal learning or on play activities as well'. Furthermore, punctuation suffers towards the end, where the final sentence lacks a concluding full stop. Despite these minor lapses, communication is clear throughout, warranting a Band 6.0 score.
