Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that primary schools place too much emphasis on formal learning and do not give children enough opportunities to play. I largely agree with this view because, although academic learning is essential at an early age, play is also an important part of a child’s development.

In many primary schools, children spend most of their time sitting in classrooms, listening to teachers, completing exercises, and preparing for tests. This approach can help children develop basic skills such as reading, writing and mathematics. However, too much formal learning can make young children feel bored or stressed. At primary-school age, children generally have a limited attention span, so expecting them to study continuously may reduce their interest in learning. For example, a child who spends several hours doing worksheets may become less motivated than one who is given opportunities to learn through activities and games.

For this reason, I believe that play should have a significant place in the primary school classroom. Playing allows children to develop social, emotional and practical skills that cannot always be taught through traditional lessons. When children play together, they learn how to communicate, cooperate, solve problems and deal with disagreements. Educational games can also make academic subjects more enjoyable. For instance, teachers can use word games to improve vocabulary or simple mathematical games to help pupils practise addition and subtraction. In this way, children can learn important academic concepts without feeling that they are constantly studying.

Nevertheless, this does not mean that formal education should be reduced dramatically. Primary school is an important stage for developing fundamental knowledge, and children need regular instruction in subjects such as language, mathematics and science. The most effective approach, therefore, is likely to combine structured learning with play-based activities. Schools could divide the school day between conventional lessons, outdoor play and classroom games or creative activities.

In conclusion, I agree that some primary schools may place too much emphasis on formal learning. While academic education is necessary, play is equally valuable because it supports children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. A balanced combination of learning and play would provide a more enjoyable and well-rounded primary education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the two-part prompt. You clearly state your position ('I largely agree with this view') in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. The first question regarding the focus on formal learning is well answered in the second paragraph, while the second question regarding the importance of play is thoroughly explored in the third and fourth paragraphs. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the use of word games for vocabulary or worksheets for basic skills. The discussion moves logically between the necessity of academic grounding and the vital cognitive, social, and emotional benefits of play, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the task requirements without any omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct and clear central topic. For example, paragraph two addresses the downsides of excessive formal learning, paragraph three explores the benefits of play, and paragraph four provides a nuanced counterpoint regarding the necessity of structured education. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately without being overly mechanical, as seen with transition markers like 'However', 'For this reason', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used effectively to structure the argument, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the progression of your ideas from introduction to final verdict.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion. Less common and topic-specific items are used effectively and with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'emphasis on formal learning', 'limited attention span', 'fundamental knowledge', and 'well-rounded primary education'. Word choice is generally precise, for instance, distinguishing between 'cognitive development' and 'social, emotional and practical skills'. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, but these do not impede communication at all. The vocabulary successfully conveys nuanced arguments about child development and educational philosophy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay exhibits a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully blending simple and complex sentences. You demonstrate good control over subordinate clauses, conditionals, and relative clauses, as seen in sentences like 'When children play together, they learn how to communicate...' and 'The most effective approach, therefore, is likely to combine structured learning with play-based activities.' The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled accurately throughout. Errors are virtually absent, and where complex structures are attempted, they are executed with a high degree of precision, ensuring seamless readability and strong grammatical control.
