Student answer (Band 6.0)

A significant number of people argue that elementary schools focus too much on learning. There has been a growing concern about this, like many institutes have to organize co-curricular activities for children, to develop their cognitive abilites and interpersonal skills. I partly agree with this view, as both sides have valid points.

In contemporary society, education plays a vital role in human life. Many institutions of different countries are implementing a new methods of teaching to children, such as smart classes and one to one interaction focus, so that teachers could understand the student abilties, like their strength and weakness. For instance, a JG international school in India had organized a sports competition and learning, they just want to identify that, which students can perform well in co-currical activities and who are more intelligent in academic subjects. Through this, they found that those students who plays recreational activities are more physicaly and mentally acitve and score very well in exams, as compared to those who does not participate in this activities are facing the anxiety issues.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks of this new approach. It is not a good thing for their future, like the students who are interested in these type of recreational activites, they not particular focus on their primary subjects. In future, if they want to apply for upsc or government jobs, then these skills are useful, but they also need to clear the academic entrance test, which requires the knowledge of science and maths. They can not rely on their extra curricular subjects and skills.

In conclusion, it is necessary for primary schools to balance their schedule and focus on both things in academic and co-curricular activites. Which help the students to cope with mental issues and physical active.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt: whether primary schools focus too much on formal learning, and the importance of play alongside learning. The writer establishes a clear position by stating they 'partly agree with this view'. Ideas are generally relevant, but the development is somewhat limited. For example, the reference to 'JG international school' is specific, but the argument about civil service exams ('upsc') feels slightly tangential and under-developed for primary education. While all parts are addressed, the support lacks full extension, placing it within the Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is coherent overall with a clear structure consisting of an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'like many institutes have to organize' and phrases such as 'For instance, a JG international school' show some awkward referencing and connectivity. Cohesive devices are present, but their application lacks seamless flexibility, which aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'contemporary society', 'interpersonal skills', and 'cognitive abilites'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'abilites', 'currical', 'physicaly', and 'acitve'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but these errors in spelling and collocation slightly hinder precision. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey meaning, fitting the criteria for Band 5.5, which is rounded to 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'implementing a new methods', 'who plays recreational activities are more physicaly and mentally acitve', and 'these type of recreational activites, they not particular focus'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly and restrict the frequency of error-free sentences, making a Band 5.5 score appropriate.
