Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the basic length requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at only 72 words. As a result, the task is addressed only minimally and remains severely undeveloped. While the student attempts to introduce a position regarding formal learning and play in primary schools, the ideas are cut short before any substantial arguments or examples can be presented. According to the task descriptors, under-length responses cannot achieve a passing score for Task Achievement. The incomplete nature of the second paragraph prevents the writer from fully exploring both parts of the prompt, resulting in a band score of 4.0 for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text demonstrates some basic organisational structure with an introductory sentence and the beginning of a first body paragraph using the transitional phrase 'To commence with'. However, because the text breaks off mid-sentence, it is impossible to evaluate overall progression or the effective use of paragraphing across a full essay. Referencing and cohesive devices are attempted, but the abrupt ending means that the structural framework remains incomplete. Cohesion is therefore faulty and mechanical due to the lack of a completed text, earning a band score of 4.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts some moderately advanced vocabulary such as 'indispensible', 'mindset', and 'physical activities'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'aruged' instead of argued, 'both plays' instead of both play, and 'To out into perpective' which is both misspelled and unidiomatic. The lexical range is limited and basic due to the short length of the text, and errors in collocation and spelling prevent the vocabulary from being used with precision or flexibility. This performance aligns with a band score of 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It is aruged that some individuals provide their views...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('play both plays a crucial role') and punctuation or phrasing failures. Furthermore, the response is incomplete, ending mid-sentence ('playground activities...'). While there is an attempt to use complex structures, the frequency of errors and the unfinished nature of the writing restrict the grammatical range and accuracy to a band score of 5.0.
