IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Rohan,

Hope you are doing well!

I would like to inform you that it has been ten years we completed our college. I have a great idea to work on it if we could get together and memorise our memory with our classmates. I am planning to book a great resort down to city area for two days, where, dance and different cuisine can be enjoyed with bunch of activities.

This is the great chance due to weekends and I have been this place before, it will be nice and huge place to get together. We will have private place to perform activities and endless talks with our group.

Almost, I am ready to plan this event, I just need few contacts of our friends as I lost it due to new mobile device. It will be great if you share me contact information and invite few friends from your side.

Excited to see our "Team" again.

Your truly friend,

Rocky

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you propose a two-day resort gathering, explain that it offers space for activities and conversation, and ask Rohan to share contacts and invite friends. These details make the purpose clear and keep the letter relevant. The explanation of why this venue would be enjoyable is present, but remains somewhat general; for example, “a great chance due to weekends” does not clearly explain the benefit of the timing. The request for help is also specific but narrow, focusing mainly on contact information and invitations. To strengthen the response, explain more fully why this format suits the group and identify any additional practical help you need, such as coordinating bookings or activities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: the opening introduces the reunion, the next paragraph gives reasons for the venue, and the final paragraph asks for help. This progression makes the main message easy to follow, and the closing is appropriate for a friendly letter. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. “This is the great chance due to weekends” does not clearly connect the weekend timing to the previous plan, while “Almost, I am ready to plan this event” is an awkward transition into the request. A few sentences also combine several details without clear punctuation. Use more precise transitions and separate related points into clear sentences to make the cohesion more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the reunion plan, including “resort,” “cuisine,” “activities,” and “contact information.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “endless talks” and “Team,” which help convey enthusiasm. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, including “memorise our memory,” “down to city area,” and “share me contact information.” These phrases may make the reader pause, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for more natural combinations and precise wording, especially when describing the event and making requests. A wider range of accurate expressions would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately informal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes a mix of simple statements and longer sentences, such as the sentence describing the resort and its activities. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, verb forms, articles, and punctuation. For example, “it has been ten years we completed our college” needs a clearer time clause, and “where, dance and different cuisine can be enjoyed” has an unnecessary comma and an incomplete structure. In “I just need few contacts,” the article is missing, while “Your truly friend” has an incorrect form. Work on building accurate complex sentences and checking articles, clause structure, and punctuation. More consistent control would make the letter smoother and clearer.
