IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Srinu,

I am writing this letter to seek your co-operation for the upcoming gathering of our friends and classmates.

I am extremely glad to inform you that i would like to organise a grand event in our old college where we had completed our studies. We celebrate this gathering as anniversary because it's almost ten years that we finished our graduation and left the college. As we are all joining for this occation, I would like to arrange few games and live concerts reflecting our old memories.

Remembering our old moments will surely take everyone of us to get emotional and thus they will lead us to another world. In order to organise this event, i am greatly in need of your help. I would like you to make calls and inform our friends and classmates to come with a special costume for the memorable event.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three required points: you propose a reunion at the old college, explain that it marks ten years since graduation and will revive shared memories, and ask your friend to contact classmates and tell them what to wear. These details make the purpose clear and relevant. However, the celebration plan is only partly developed: “a few games and live concerts” gives a general idea, but you could explain why the college setting or these activities would suit the group. The request for help is also quite narrow, and “a special costume” is not explained. Add practical details, such as help choosing a date, arranging the venue, or confirming attendance, to make the proposal more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the reunion, describe the proposed event, give a reason for it, and then ask for help. Paragraphing also separates the event idea from the explanation and request, so the reader can follow the main purpose. Some links between ideas are less clear or sound mechanical. For example, “Remembering our old moments will surely take everyone of us to get emotional and thus they will lead us to another world” does not clearly connect the memories to the benefit of the event. The closing is also incomplete. Use clearer transitions and divide the letter into purposeful paragraphs, with a distinct closing line, to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “upcoming gathering,” “anniversary,” “live concerts,” and “memorable event,” which helps communicate the reunion theme. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “reflecting our old memories,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. “Take everyone of us to get emotional” and “lead us to another world” make the intended meaning difficult to interpret, while “special costume” is vague in this context. Spelling and word-form slips such as “occation” and “best wishe” also reduce accuracy. Choose familiar, precise expressions for the emotional benefit and specify the dress code, for example, “wear clothes from our college days.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and longer sentences, such as “I am writing this letter to seek your co-operation” and the sentence describing the anniversary and planned activities. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in these longer structures. For example, “We celebrate this gathering as anniversary” needs an article and a more suitable verb form, and “I would like to arrange few games” also needs an article. Capitalisation is inconsistent in “i,” and the final sign-off lacks appropriate punctuation. Review articles, verb forms, and sentence construction, especially when joining several ideas, while retaining the mix of sentence types you already attempt.
