Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Alex,
How's going ?. I hope you're doing well. It's been a long time since we meet each other. I really miss our college days as well as all friends from our batch and guess what next month is our 10th year anniversary since we graduated. That was the last time when all of us enjoyed together as everybody got busy in their lives after that. Therefore, I am writing this letter to let you know that I have decided to organize a small get together event at my home to celebrate in memory of our old college days.
I want to make that party memorable that's why I am thinking to make it special by hosting dinner and other refreshments where we will memorize our old college days Moreover, We can play indoor games to make it more fun. I bought a camera as well for taking pictures.
I'm thinking of arranging it on coming long weekend at my house where we can meet all our classmates. I thought it's a good idea because everyone is available on weekends so there are not any excuses by any of us. Plus, everybody will have plenty of time to spend.
Finally, I need a small favor from you regrading the catering. I remember you told me once about your friend who organize catering for small house events. As, you know I'll be busy making other arrangements that's why I want you to help me by calling your friend in order to arrange refreshments. Don't worry about the money, just send me all bills and I'll make payment to you.
I'll be more than happy to see you at event.
See you Soon,
Anshul

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you propose a dinner gathering at your home, explain that a weekend should suit classmates and allow more time together, and ask Alex to contact a catering friend. The personal context about missing college friends also makes the purpose clear and appropriate for a letter to a former classmate. Your ideas are extended with details such as refreshments, indoor games and taking photographs. To strengthen the response further, develop the reason for choosing a home gathering a little more specifically—for example, how it would help everyone reconnect comfortably—rather than relying mainly on general availability. The request for help is clear, though you could specify what arrangements Alex should confirm with the caterer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The message follows a clear progression: you introduce the anniversary and proposed event, describe activities, explain the timing, and then make a practical request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Therefore,” “Moreover,” and “Finally” guide the reader through the letter. The sequence is easy to follow overall. At times, however, connectors are used mechanically or punctuation makes the relationship between ideas less smooth; for instance, “I want to make that party memorable that's why…” would read more clearly as two sentences or with a suitable linking structure. The opening paragraph also contains several ideas in one long sequence. More controlled sentence boundaries and slightly more varied transitions would make the organisation feel more polished.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the social purpose, including “anniversary,” “organize,” “refreshments,” “indoor games,” and “catering.” These choices make the event and the requested assistance understandable, and the tone is generally friendly. There are some inaccurate or unnatural word choices and collocations, such as “in memory of our old college days” and “memorize our old college days”; the intended meaning is to remember or reminisce about those days. “10th year anniversary” is also less natural than “10th anniversary.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “regrading” and “organize” for a friend who organizes catering reduce precision. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms before sending.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “I thought it's a good idea because everyone is available on weekends” and the explanation beginning “As, you know…”. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain across verb forms, sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “How's going?” needs a subject, “since we meet each other” requires a past-tense form, and “your friend who organize” needs subject–verb agreement. There are also run-on sentences, including the sentence joining the party idea and its reason, and inconsistent capitalization after “Moreover.” To improve, check tense consistency, agreement and sentence boundaries, while continuing to use a mix of simple and complex forms.
