IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are in good health. The reason for my letter today is that i would like to organise a party at our college's auditorium to celebrate 10 year anniversay.
I was thinking to arrange a small party with all our batchmates and friends to remind us how we embarked on our journey to become successful in life. I thaught we can have some food and beverages along with some games like we used to play in our hostel days. I think it is very important for everyone to come and join us as i know we all have been busy with our work schedule and this can be a relaxing evening for everyone. Lastly, I would require help from your end to contact our college's head Mr.Stark to lend us the auditorium as i know you have good terms with him.
I am looking forward to hear from you soon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three bullet points and establish a clear, friendly purpose: a party in the college auditorium, with food, drinks and games, to mark the anniversary. The reason is relevant too: it would help former classmates reconnect and enjoy a relaxing evening after busy work schedules. The request for help is specific, as you ask John to contact Mr Stark about borrowing the venue. This meets the task well, while showing some of the fuller development expected at the next level. To strengthen it further, explain more clearly why the auditorium and activities suit the group, and add practical details about the event or other help needed, such as inviting classmates or arranging refreshments. A warmer closing would also complete the letter more naturally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression from its purpose, to the proposed celebration and its benefits, and finally to the request for John’s help. This makes the message easy to follow, and the paragraphing separates the opening from the main information. Linking expressions such as “I was thinking” and “Lastly” help signal the sequence, although “Lastly” feels slightly mechanical and the main paragraph contains several different points in one block. The final sentence, “I am looking forward to hear from you soon,” provides a suitable closing idea but would benefit from a separate sign-off. For more flexible cohesion, group the event details and the request into distinct paragraphs and use transitions that show the relationship between ideas rather than simply their order.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for this familiar social purpose, and phrases such as “celebrate,” “food and beverages,” “batchmates,” and “relaxing evening” communicate the main ideas. You also attempt some more specific expressions, including “embarked on our journey” and “good terms with him,” though the former sounds rather formal for a friendly letter and the latter is less natural than “get on well with him.” Spelling errors such as “anniversay” and “thaught” show that accuracy is not yet consistent. Aim for natural, precise collocations suited to the informal context: for example, “organise a reunion party” and “book the auditorium.” Proofreading spelling and choosing familiar, idiomatic phrases will make your message more fluent without requiring unnecessarily elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause in “as I know you have good terms with him” and a sentence explaining why the event would be worthwhile. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce accuracy. For example, “10 year” needs a plural form, and “I am looking forward to hear” should use a gerund after “look forward to.” Capitalise “I” consistently, and check sentence boundaries and punctuation, particularly around “Mr. Stark.” You could also vary the structures used to make requests, such as “Could you contact the college head to ask whether we can use the auditorium?” Careful editing of verb patterns, plurals and punctuation would improve control while preserving your clear meaning.
