IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I hope you are doing well.
It's almost ten years since we left the college and I would like to arrange a re-union including all our friends and classmates on 27th June 2027.
I am planning the event to be 2 parts. In the first section we will be playing games against each other at the city mall gaming complex. I believe it would be great fun reminding us about our college gaming tournament. Then we will have some coffee in the food corner. In the next part, we will have dinner at a restaurant that suits everyone.
I have already created a group and added friends who are interested in joining. I will take care of the game event and purchasing prices. It would be great if you could help me regarding the restaurant selection. You can create a poll in our friends group to finalize the selection.
Please call me when you are available for a detailed discussion and many thanks for helping to make the event successful.
Thanks and regards,
Miller

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: you propose a reunion on 27 June 2027, explain the appeal of revisiting the college gaming tournament, and ask John to help choose a restaurant by creating a poll. The event plan is relevant and specific, and the friendly tone suits a letter to a former classmate. The explanation of why this format would be enjoyable is less developed than the practical arrangements, however; the link to the old tournament is mentioned but not expanded, and the dinner plan is not explained beyond accommodating everyone. To strengthen the response, add a little more about what classmates would enjoy or how the event would help everyone reconnect, while keeping the request for John's help clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a clear sequence: you introduce the anniversary and date, outline the two parts of the event, then explain the arrangements and ask for help. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “In the first section” and “In the next part” guide the reader through the plan. Some linking is a little mechanical, and “the event to be 2 parts” makes the transition less smooth. The final request and closing are understandable, though the move from the poll to asking John to call could be connected more naturally. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make references between sentences more fluid to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for organising a reunion, including “gaming complex,” “restaurant selection,” “poll,” and “detailed discussion.” These choices make the arrangements easy to understand, and the tone is generally appropriate for a friend. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or less natural, such as “purchasing prices” and “the event to be 2 parts”; “re-union” is also not the standard spelling. These do not prevent the reader from understanding your plan, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more conventional expressions for event planning and check spelling and collocations, especially when describing costs, activities, and the structure of the celebration.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message is clear. For example, “I believe it would be great fun reminding us about our college gaming tournament” gives a reason, while “You can create a poll in our friends group to finalize the selection” makes a direct request. Some grammatical errors remain, including “since we left the college,” “planning the event to be 2 parts,” and “help me regarding the restaurant selection.” The sentence about the first section also needs a clearer grammatical construction. These issues rarely obstruct meaning, but more accurate articles, verb patterns, and sentence construction would make the letter smoother. Review these patterns and proofread for punctuation and sentence boundaries.
