IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Prakruti,

I am so happy that we finally met last weekend and let me tell you it has been ten years since we graduated form the Gujarat University. We should definitely celebrate this milestone.

I was thinking to organise a party and invite all our batchmate at Ahmedabad. I have came across this amazing mall that just started in Ahmedabad named as Alpha One and I must say I am totally in awe with the facilities they are providing. If we organise an event with them they will provide all the services including DJ, multiple cuisine full course dinner and drinks and sitting arrangements with complimentary photography that too in affordable price range.

I recon this is the best way to celebrate our 10th graduation anniversary as it's feasible for the majority of our classmates to visit Ahmedabad and it has an excellent connectivity. Further, we studied in Ahmedabad so it holds special place in our heart without a doubt.

I would like you to create a what's app group with our peers to discuss about this party in detail and to get their suggestions as well. I can't wait to meet everyone and recall golden memories and create a new ones.

Best Regards,

Mansi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, including the suggestion of a venue and the request for the recipient to organize a group. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the description of the venue and the reasoning behind the choice of location. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing request is specific and actionable. The response is fully developed and maintains a consistent focus throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher in terms of task coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the initial greeting and purpose to the venue suggestion, the reasoning, and finally the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Further,' 'I was thinking to,' and 'I recon' (though informal) are used to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the body of the proposal, and the concluding request. The flow is natural and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an informal letter, using phrases like 'in awe,' 'golden memories,' and 'milestone.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies and informal slips, such as 'I recon' (should be 'reckon') and 'what's app' (should be 'WhatsApp'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message with precision, the occasional spelling and word-choice errors prevent it from reaching the highest band. The use of 'amazing' and 'amazing' is a bit repetitive, but the overall lexical control is good for this task type.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'graduated form' (should be 'from'), 'I have came across' (should be 'I have come across'), and 'invite all our batchmate' (should be 'batchmates'). Additionally, 'in affordable price range' is missing an article. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the sentence structures are varied enough to maintain interest. The punctuation is generally accurate, though some minor slips occur in preposition usage.
