IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have recently used a service from your furniture moving company,The Best Movers, and I am writing this letter in order to provide my feedback about the service as asked by your organization.

On the day of moving, which was on the 30th of August, the entire team of movers was at my address on the promised time with all the required equiments used for moving. Apart from this, they wrapped all the fragile products in bubble wrap before loading into their truck due to which, my mind was at full peace that all the belongings were in good hands.

However, the entire team was very respectfull and trained, I would like to mention about Rui who is one of your supervisor. He not only completed the whole moving process in significant time but also wrote the names on each box, which helped me alot during unpacking my stuff.

The service provided by your company's staff was top notch, but I would like to mention about one particular thing about which I was not actully delighted. On the day I hired your service the customer representative neither mentioned on call nor in the email that I will be the responsible for fueling up their vehicle.

Lastly, I give 4.5 star ratting to your company's service as the entire process was really smooth.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhmanpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all parts of the task effectively. You clearly state the purpose of the letter, describe the positive aspects of the service, mention a specific staff member, and address the negative experience regarding the fuel costs. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of feedback. The ideas are well-developed and the letter follows a logical structure that addresses the prompt's requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully explained; for instance, the mention of the fuel cost could be slightly more integrated into the overall narrative of the service experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'However', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the feedback. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the arrival and service quality to the specific praise for a staff member, and finally to the complaint. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fragile products', 'top notch', and 'significant time'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'equiments' (equipment), 'respectfull' (respectful), 'actully' (actually), and 'ratting' (rating). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid informal phrasing where a more formal alternative would be better suited to the context of a professional letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I will be the responsible for fueling' (should be 'I would be responsible for fueling') and 'one of your supervisor' (should be 'one of your supervisors'). Additionally, the sentence 'However, the entire team was very respectfull...' uses 'However' incorrectly in this context, as it introduces a positive point rather than a contrast. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your message.
