IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Raman,
I am writing this letter to appreciate you for making my visit in your city a remarkable memory for me.
Although last month my visit in your city was just for few days, it was memorable experience for me. If you did not guide me, I could not explore such amazing places in Toronto.
No doubt all the places you showed me was eye-catching, but CN Tower's view I must say was overwhelming experience for me. That had reduced my fear from height, from which I was suffering in my life from long time.
Now I want you to come to my city, so that I can get the chance to do something amazing for you. I am sure you will feel over the moon if I show you the famous visiting spots of Brampton. Let me know when you can visit, then I will plan accordingly.
Can't wait to meet you again.
With love,
Yours Manpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly expressed your appreciation for the visit, highlighted specific memorable moments like the CN Tower, and extended a warm invitation for your friend to visit Brampton. The tone is appropriate for a personal letter to a friend, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a balanced response that covers both the reflection on the past trip and the proposal for a future one. The structure is logical and fulfills the requirements of a friendly letter effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the opening appreciation, the reflection on the Toronto visit, the specific highlight of the CN Tower, and the invitation to Brampton. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'If', 'No doubt', and 'Now' to link your thoughts. While the flow is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat straightforward. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing is consistently precise throughout the text to improve the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including some effective idiomatic expressions like 'over the moon'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'appreciate you for making' (better: 'thank you for making') and 'reduced my fear from height' (better: 'reduced my fear of heights'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate that your control over more complex collocations is still developing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise descriptive adjectives and natural phrasal verbs would enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences ('If you did not guide me, I could not explore...'). However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, including subject-verb agreement errors like 'all the places you showed me was' (should be 'were') and prepositional errors like 'suffering in my life from long time' (should be 'for a long time'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your focus on verb tense consistency and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
