IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hi Bob,

Long time, no see! I haven’t seen you for ages, and I really miss you. I hope you’re doing well.

I’m writing to you because I’m going to organise a big party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our graduation. I’ll invite all our friends and colleagues.

Let me first describe what I’m going to do. I’ll reserve a big restaurant in the city centre for the event. I’m thinking of the 25th of July because it will be a long weekend, so everyone can come easily. What do you think? I’ll also ask our friends to wear clothes similar to what we wore at our graduation party to relive those special moments.

I believe that celebrating the anniversary this way will be enjoyable and exciting. In addition, it will remind us of those golden days when we were studying together.

Anyway, before I forget, I want you to call our friends Emma and Michael because I can’t reach them.

Send my best to the kids, and whenever you’re around, give me a ring. I can’t wait to see you at the party. Get back to me if you have any questions. Don’t forget to confirm whether the 25th is suitable for you, Emma, and Michael.

Bye for now,

Amr

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly explained the purpose of the letter, provided details about the event (location, date, and theme), and included the necessary request for Bob to contact other friends. The tone is consistently appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the information provided is relevant and sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the greeting, the purpose of the letter, the event details, the request, and the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Let me first', 'In addition', and 'Anyway' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text. The referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is natural. The structure is coherent, and the use of cohesive devices is neither mechanical nor excessive, contributing to a smooth reading experience.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter. Phrases like 'relive those special moments', 'golden days', and 'give me a ring' are natural and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the tone well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or idiomatic expressions to add flair. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use future forms ('I’m going to organise', 'I’ll reserve') and conditional structures ('whenever you’re around') accurately. The grammar is largely error-free, and punctuation is used correctly to support the meaning. While the sentence structures are functional and clear, there is limited use of more sophisticated grammatical forms (such as passive voice or varied subordinate clauses) that would demonstrate a wider range. Nevertheless, the control is consistent, and the writing is highly readable.
