Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The student covers the purpose of the letter, which is to inform a friend about moving to their country, starting college, and living nearby. However, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, coming in significantly short at only 96 words. Because of this severe under-length, the ideas are under-developed and the task is only partially addressed, which directly impacts the task achievement score under official IELTS guidelines. To improve, the student needs to expand on their points by adding more details, such as discussing what they plan to study, asking specific questions about the friend's life, or suggesting concrete plans for their arrival.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter maintains a friendly, informal tone appropriate for a personal correspondence. The ideas are grouped into logical paragraphs, with the opening and closing functioning as expected for a casual letter to a friend. However, the overall organisation is very brief, making the progression of ideas minimal. Simple cohesive devices like 'Actually' and 'and' are used to connect clauses, but the lack of length limits the opportunity to demonstrate a wider range of cohesive features. Referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing, though short, is appropriate for an informal note.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic personal message, but it contains several spelling errors and typos, such as 'furter' instead of 'further', 'eagar' instead of 'eager', and 'addmision' instead of 'admission'. The range of vocabulary is quite limited, relying on everyday words like 'good', 'best', and 'long time'. There is a lack of less common or idiomatic lexical items that would push the score higher. While communication is not severely impeded by the errors, the frequency of basic spelling mistakes prevents the response from achieving a higher band in this category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Actually i want to inform you that i am moving...' and 'I can't wait to meet you, you just inform me when you are free...'. There are noticeable grammatical and punctuation issues throughout the text, including lowercase 'i' pronouns ('i want', 'i am'), missing commas in compound structures, and slight run-on tendencies. Complex structures tend to be basic and feature occasional inaccuracies. However, despite these grammatical slips, the meaning remains understandable to the reader.
