IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing a letter to draw your attention to my problem which I am facing due to high level noise from recently opened restaurant in campus near by my residence.

As you aware recently last week new restaurant opened in campus, I don’t have any issues from restaurant except from their huge noise at late night. Actually, they started booking parties at late night due to this they attend customer at late night and they play party’s DJ on high volume the result me as well as our residence students unable to focus on study & this is the big problem for us even we can not sleep peacefully at night.

We can reduce noise issue if university make some rules for restaurants. Timing of last customer attend & fix volume of DJ music. They can play music but do not erupt others individuals. Hope you will understand the issue and take some necessary actions to resolve this issue on priority.

Your thankfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all parts of the prompt well. The purpose of writing is clear from the opening sentence, and the student outlines the specific issue regarding noise from the recently opened campus restaurant. The ideas are adequately supported by explaining how late-night parties and high-volume DJ music impact studying and sleeping. Finally, the student makes practical suggestions for rules that the university could implement, such as regulating closing times and music volume. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint letter. The response meets all task requirements with a clear position and well-developed ideas, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.5 or 7.0, though some points like the proposed solutions could be slightly more expanded to reach a higher level of development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical structure typical of a formal complaint, moving from the introduction of the problem to specific details and finally to suggested solutions. However, paragraphing is somewhat problematic; the second paragraph is a single massive block of text that groups multiple distinct ideas together, including the timing of parties, the noise impact, and the consequences for sleeping and studying. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'Actually, they started...' and 'the result me as well as...'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'erupt others individuals' where the pronoun and verb choice disrupts the flow. Overall arrangement is coherent, but faulty cohesion and poor paragraphing place this clearly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate the problem. However, the range is limited and repetition is noticeable, such as the repeated use of 'late night' and 'issue'. There are several noticeable word choice and collocation errors, including 'draw your attention to my problem which I am facing due to high level noise' (high levels of noise), 'attend customer' (serve customers), 'party's DJ on high volume' (play DJ music at a high volume), and 'erupt others individuals' (interrupt other individuals). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect the constraints of Band 5.5. The vocabulary attempts are occasionally ambitious but hindered by inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical accuracy is weak throughout. There are frequent structural errors and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'recently opened restaurant in campus near by my residence' (a recently opened restaurant on campus near my residence), 'As you aware' (As you are aware), and 'result me as well as our residence students unable to focus' (resulting in me and other resident students being unable to focus). Punctuation and sign-off conventions are also flawed, with 'Your thankfully' instead of 'Yours thankfully' or 'Yours faithfully'. Because these errors are frequent and occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader, the grammar performance aligns best with Band 5.0.
