IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I am persuing my education in Social Services Worker. I want to get degree in this field in order to receive a better job position. Therefore, I will be unable to work full-time and I would like to request that you reduce my current working hours.

I would like to share my new schedule with you as I will start going to the university from next month. I already choose the evening classes from monday to wednesday after seeing my work schedule. However I did not get same schedule for Thurday and friday due to busy slots. I would like to request that you adjust my these two days accordingly.

I want to inform you that my part time studies will help our company as well. As I am going to learn most effective strategies to redirect our clients along with this I will get a chance to do some practicals, which I can apply on my client later.

I will look forward to hearing back from you,

Your Sincerely,

Sukhveer kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter successfully covers all key requirements of the task. The purpose of writing is immediately clear (requesting a reduction in working hours due to studies), the details of the new schedule are explained, and the benefits of the studies to the workplace are provided. The writer maintains an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for corresponding with an employer. Although some points could be slightly more elaborated, the overall message is conveyed effectively, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 or 7.0. Looking at the descriptors, the response addresses all parts with a clear purpose throughout, placing it comfortably at Band 6.5 moving towards Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is arranged in a logical sequence with a clear introduction, body paragraphs dealing with the schedule and company benefits, and a standard sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'Along with this' are utilised, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or basic. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of information makes it easy for the employer to follow the writer's request. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'better job position', 'evening classes', and 'practical strategies'. However, there are notable lexical and spelling errors, such as 'persuing' instead of pursuing, 'get degree' instead of get a degree, and 'Thurday' instead of Thursday. Additionally, phrasing like 'do some practicals' is slightly unnatural in this context. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to inform you that I am...' and 'As I am going to learn most effective strategies...'. There are several grammatical errors present, including missing articles ('educating in Social Services Worker', 'get degree'), incorrect preposition usage ('choose the evening classes from monday to wednesday'), and a slight restructuring error in 'adjust my these two days accordingly'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, representing a typical Band 6 grammatical profile.
