Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mitesh,

How've you been? I hope you are doing well. I am writing to advise you about your current employment. I guess the reason behind your disappointment with physiotherapy job is the limited salary your clinic is paying you. Plus, you lack professional knowledge, which may prevent you from growing professionally.

I want to provide you with some useful suggestions. Firstly, If I were you, I'd prioritize improving professional skills such as effective assessment techniques, communication and practical abilities. In addition, it might be a good idea to change your job, which may allow you to secure comparatively higher salary.

I'd strongly suggest some ways, which will help you achieve a greater sense of satisfaction. You should focus on gaining your professional knowledge. Alternatively, if you have extra time, think about taking advanced physiotherapy course. Whatever you decide, I'll always stand by you.

Fingers crossed you achieve success as soon as possible! Drop me a line and let me know.

Take care,

Miral Khunt

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The letter clearly addresses Mitesh by adopting an appropriate semi-formal tone for a friend who is facing employment difficulties. You successfully cover all necessary aspects of the prompt by identifying the likely cause of his disappointment, such as the 'limited salary' and a lack of professional knowledge, while offering constructive solutions including improving specific skills and considering a job change. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, with a clear purpose sustained throughout the response. The purpose is fully realized and meets the expectations for a General Training Task 1 letter, showing a strong ability to communicate advice naturally and effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter is logically sequenced and easy to follow, moving naturally from acknowledging the situation to providing specific suggestions and ending with an encouraging sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct function (greeting and context, first set of suggestions, additional advice, and closing). Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'Alternatively' are well managed and help guide the reader smoothly through your arguments without appearing mechanical or forced.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal letter. Phrases like 'prioritize improving professional skills', 'comparatively higher salary', and 'greater sense of satisfaction' show a good command of collocation. There are minor unnatural expressions, such as 'gain your professional knowledge' instead of 'build' or 'expand' professional knowledge, and the missing article in 'taking advanced physiotherapy course', but these do not impede communication. The overall lexical range is adequate to convey precise meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over conditional structures ('If I were you, I'd prioritize...') and relative clauses ('which may allow you to...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well throughout. There are a few very minor inaccuracies, such as omitting an article ('a' advanced physiotherapy course) and a slight capitalization error in 'Firstly, If I were you...', but these represent occasional slips rather than systematic errors and do not hinder the flow of reading.
