• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Ana,
It's been a while! I thought of catching up with you and plan a reunion.
It has almost been a decade to our graduation, time has indeed flied. I was wondering if we could celebrate this occasion together with all our batchmates at Los Pollos Hermanos Restaurant. We could cut a cake there and have a themed decor for good pictures, followed by dinner buffet.
I really think this will be a great way to reminisce our undergraduate student times as we often used to get together here in between classes for food and drinks. We have also celebrated many birthdays in here together during the time. I'm sure that this will be a very nostalgic yet memorable place to have our party.
Would you be able to assist me with the decor? You are currently working as an interior designer and it would be a delight to have you execute the decor. I have attached reference pictures to this letter. Please let me know of any raw material that you should require and I can arrange that for you. Lastly, I haven't been able to get a hold of Stevens, I'd appreciate if you could check up on him. I wouldn't want h.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Sam Khan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully covered all parts of the task prompt in a natural and appropriate tone. You clearly stated the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, specifically proposing a reunion dinner with a themed decor and cake at Los Pollos Hermanos Restaurant. You effectively explained why this venue would be ideal by highlighting the nostalgic memories and undergraduate student times spent there. Additionally, you described the help needed by asking Ana to assist with the interior design and decor, and requesting that she check up on Stevens. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the communicative goals are fully achieved with appropriate register and development throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different points, such as the event proposal, the justification, and the requests for help. Cohesive devices like 'followed by', 'as we often used to', and 'Lastly' help guide the reader smoothly through the text. Referencing is generally clear, for example, using 'this will be a great way' to link back to the proposed event. Although the ending of the fourth paragraph cuts off abruptly ('I wouldn't want h.'), the overall flow of information is well-managed and meets the requirements for a coherent, well-structured informal letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'reminisce our undergraduate student times', 'nostalgic yet memorable', and 'interior designer' show a good command of lexical items appropriate to the context. There are a few minor lexical slips, such as 'plan a reunion' following 'catching up with you' (which could be phrased more idiomatically) and 'in here together' rather than simply 'here', but these do not impede communication. Your vocabulary choice is natural and fits the friendly, conversational tone required for a letter to a college friend.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You employ a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, using conditional and modal structures such as 'I was wondering if we could celebrate' and 'Would you be able to assist me'. The majority of your sentences are accurate and grammatically sound. There is a minor typo or slip in the second paragraph where you wrote 'time has indeed flied' (instead of 'flown'), and the letter ends with an incomplete sentence fragment ('I wouldn't want h.'). However, these minor errors are infrequent and do not interfere with understanding. Your punctuation and general sentence control remain solid throughout the main body of the letter.
