Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. First, the candidate specifies the kind of event they want to organise, namely a college pass out anniversary reunion featuring a themed dress code where guests wear masks and college-style attire. Second, the student explains why this is a good idea, stating that it allows everyone to share college memories and meet each other. Third, the student describes the help needed by asking Tina to assist in organising the event due to her professional background as an event organiser. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fitting a letter to a college friend. All parts of the task are addressed adequately, earning a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure typical of informal correspondence, starting with a friendly greeting and concluding with a warm sign-off. However, paragraphing is somewhat underdeveloped, with multiple distinct points grouped tightly together. Cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt transition in 'I knew that you are event organizer, it would wonderful if you could assist me...' referencing could also be clearer, as seen in the slightly confusing self-introduction 'I am your Raman who was you classmate.' While the general message is easy to follow, the cohesion lacks the flexibility required for higher band levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, though basic and occasionally hindered by word choice and collocation errors. Examples include 'college pass out anniversary' instead of 'college graduation anniversary', 'dress with style they use to during college time' instead of 'wearing the style they used to wear', and 'Please response early as possible' instead of 'Please reply as soon as possible.' The student attempts some less common phrases like 'theme based dress code' and 'event organizer', but these contain minor mechanical issues. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I know it's been a long time i see you , but i want to invite you be part of this event.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak throughout the text, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles ('invite you to for reunion event', 'event will of including'), tense inconsistencies ('style they use to'), punctuation errors (spacing before commas), and omission of subject pronouns ('it will be theme based dress code', 'everyone have to wear'). While these errors do not completely obscure the message, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score.
