Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Ali,
I hope you're doing well. As you know it's been ten years since we have been passed out from collage, that's why I want to arrange a party to celebrate this aniversary with all our classmates and friends.
Initially, I thought to arrange a trip to Murree but later I realized that it would be good to have a party inside our collage cafetaria. This way we can meet our collage teachers and it would be amazing to sit in the cafe and recall our memories. We'll organise same sandwiches which we always liked to eat in our college days.
As you live in the same city as of our collage that's why I need you to book the cafe for 4 hours on 10th October. Please let me know when the booking is confirmed so we can inform all our friends and classmates.
Thank you for helping me to arrange this meeting, please let me know if you have suggestion related to this.
Yours sincerely,
Umer Nazeer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the writer specifies the kind of celebration event they want to organise, namely a reunion party at the college cafeteria and a trip to Murree as an initial thought. Second, they explain why this format is beneficial, mentioning that it allows everyone to meet their former teachers and reminisce in the familiar cafe while eating their favorite sandwiches. Third, the writer clearly describes the help they need from Ali, which is booking the cafe for four hours on October 10th. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The requirements of the task are fully addressed, warranting a solid band score for task achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The text is divided into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose: an introduction and statement of purpose, the development of event ideas and reasons, the request for assistance, and a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'later', and 'This way' are used effectively to guide the reader through the letter. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring that ideas are grouped logically and connected smoothly from sentence to sentence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas about organising an event and reminiscing about the past. Phrases like 'recall our memories', 'organise', and 'booking is confirmed' are used correctly. However, there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', and 'aniversary' instead of 'anniversary'. Additionally, phrases like 'have been passed out' are unnatural and represent L1 interference. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writer from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'As you know it's been ten years since we have been passed out from collage...' and 'As you live in the same city as of our collage that's why I need you to...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical inaccuracies, such as unnecessary prepositional usage ('as of our collage') and tense errors ('have been passed out'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication.
