Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Krunal,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to take your help to celebrate our ten years of friendship with our classmates and friends.

I want to organise a 'get together' party to celebrate our anniversary. I was thinking to book a banquet hall followed by a great dinner with music.

It would be great to arrange a 'get together' this way as we all are will be meeting after a decade. Moreover, seeing everyone after a years and catching up with them would be fun.

However, to set up this evening I would like to take your help and time. I would really appreciate if you can give me our classmates addresses and contact numbers as you recenly invited them into your wedding because I want to send them an invitation cards.

I look forward to hearing from you and I am really excited about this event.

Kind regards,

Pragnya Patil.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly stated the kind of event you want to organise, which is a get-together party at a banquet hall with dinner and music. You explained why this would be a good way to celebrate, mentioning that you are meeting after a decade and that catching up would be fun. Finally, you described the help needed by asking for classmates' addresses and contact numbers to send out invitation cards. Your tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout the letter. The ideas are clearly relevant to the task and fully meet the requirements for a General Training letter. Therefore, this performance demonstrates a solid execution of the prompt's instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter has a clear and logical overall progression. You used standard letter-writing conventions, beginning with an appropriate salutation and opening statement, and concluding nicely. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different points, such as the type of event, the justification, and the request for help. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, though there are minor mechanical transitions like 'Moreover' and 'However'. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences like 'seeing everyone after a years' contain slight awkwardness. Overall, the ideas are easy to follow and the structure flows naturally from introduction to conclusion, demonstrating good organizational skills.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal invitation letter, using phrases like 'take your help', 'get together party', and 'catching up'. However, there are a few word choice and grammatical slips, such as writing 'after a years' instead of 'after many years' or 'after ten years', and 'recenly invited them into your wedding' instead of 'to your wedding'. You also repeated the phrase 'take your help' twice near the beginning of your body paragraphs. While you attempted some functional vocabulary, the occasional errors and repetition prevent a higher score, placing your performance comfortably at the competent band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully combined simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses introduced by 'as', 'when', or 'if'. For example, the sentence 'I would really appreciate if you can give me our classmates addresses' shows an attempt at a conditional structure, though it lacks 'would' ('could give me'). There are a few grammatical errors, including 'we all are will be meeting' (a tense collision) and 'invitation cards' (plural noun mismatch after 'an'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. You have demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with acceptable overall control.
