Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. First, the letter specifies the kind of celebration event, mentioning a gathering at a new restaurant to mark the tenth college anniversary. Second, it explains why it would be good to celebrate in this way, noting that it provides a great opportunity to catch up and reminisce since a long time has passed. Third, it describes the help needed, specifically asking friends to suggest fun games for the party. The tone is mostly appropriate for writing to a group of friends, though the opening greeting 'Dear friends' is slightly unusual for a personal letter to a single friend, as the prompt asks to 'Write a letter to one of your college friends'. However, all content requirements are fulfilled effectively, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from the invitation to the reasons for celebrating, followed by the request for help. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct points, such as the introduction, the reasoning, and the specific request for games. Cohesive devices are employed, including transition words like 'Moreover' and 'That's why', although referencing and transitions can occasionally feel slightly repetitive or mechanical. For example, 'I think this the great opportunity' and 'That's why I think It would be better' create a repetitive sentence-starting pattern. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow and the message is cohesive throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday ideas and intentions. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'significant', 'anniversary', and 'celebrate'. However, there are several word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'tenth year anniversary of college' instead of 'tenth college anniversary', 'Its been ten years left the college' instead of 'It has been ten years since I left college', and 'do a lot of fun' instead of 'have a lot of fun'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor grammatical-lexical slips like 'clelbrate' occur. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably in the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. Sentences such as 'I have made plans about this party and you guys can let me know if need something different to make it more enjoyable' show an attempt at subordination. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly missing articles ('this the great opportunity'), missing subjects or auxiliary verbs ('if need something'), tense/aspect errors ('Its been long time to see you all'), and punctuation slips. Although these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally re-read, they rarely impede overall communication. The grammatical profile aligns well with the band 5.5 to 6 descriptors.
