IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear friends,
How are you all doing? I really hope you are alright. I want to ask you about this weekend's activities. Have you planned anything? If not, then I have good news for you. I cannot imagine that it has been a decade since we graduated and left the college. I am going to plan an event to celebrate the anniversary with you guys. The timing for the event is 5. P.M to 9. P.M. on Sunday, the 4th of October, at the Albion Mall.
I would like to organize a themed party where all the former students can participate in a specific outfit. In addition to this, they will have to perform and mimic the professor on stage they like the most. Doesn't this sound exciting? I also invited our instructors as well.
The primary reason to arrange this event is to spend some time with each other because it's been a while we haven't see each other. So, this celebration will connect us, and we will enjoy it a lot, I promise. It's my order; you will have to come to this get-together celebration.
See you soon. Take care and get ready to rock on the stage.
Best regards,
Devanshi Vasani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all bullet points required by the task prompt, though with some mixed focus. The letter mentions a 10-year college anniversary celebration (themed party with outfits and professor impersonations), explains the reason for the gathering to reconnect after a decade, and touches upon organisation, mentioning that instructors are invited and asking friends to get ready. However, the prompt asks the writer to 'Write a letter to one of your college friends', but the student addresses the letter 'Dear friends,' and uses plural pronouns ('How are you all doing?', 'with you guys'), treating it as a group message rather than a letter to a single friend. Additionally, the request for help with organisation is very weak, only stating 'you will have to come' rather than explicitly asking for specific assistance. Ideas are relevant and extended, but addressing multiple people shifts the tone slightly away from the specific persona requested.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is generally clear and easy to follow, with a recognizable overall arrangement. The letter is broken into logical paragraphs: an introduction setting up the reunion, a body paragraph detailing the event format, and a final paragraph explaining the purpose and closing. However, referencing is sometimes confusing due to the opening 'Dear friends' addressing a group, while later parts sound like an individual command ('It's my order; you will have to come'). Cohesive devices are used, but transitions between ideas feel a bit abrupt. For example, moving from the specific time and location in paragraph one directly into the theme in paragraph two lacks smooth logical bridging. Paragraphing is used adequately, but the overall cohesion requires tighter control to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'themed party', 'mimic the professor', and 'get-together celebration'. Word choice is generally functional, but there are noticeable inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'left the college' (instead of 'left college') and 'rock on the stage' (which sounds a bit informal or colloquial for this context). Furthermore, the phrase 'it's been a while we haven't see each other' contains a grammatical slip affecting vocabulary flow. Spelling is accurate throughout the response. Overall, the lexical resource is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but limited in precision and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional clauses ('If not, then I have good news for you') and relative clauses ('the professor on stage they like the most'). There are, however, several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Notable errors include 'it's been a while we haven't see each other' (tense and prepositional omission error, should be 'since we last saw each other') and '5. P.M to 9. P.M.' (punctuation errors in time formatting). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are noticeable, they do not seriously impede communication. The control over complex structures is developing, placing the response comfortably in the band 6 range.
