Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Lovepreet,

It is unbelievable that it's been 10 years already. Life keeps us so busy that we forget the people closest to us. These days, I miss those days every day that our group spent together.

I am planning to organise an event like a small cocktail party for our whole class, which includes our friend circle. I want to plan this party because recently I realised that I am so focused on work that I forget what I used to live for; maybe this time you guys will remind me of my old self. I really want to celebrate our college year. I am sure that everyone has their ups and downs. So, maybe this celebration may work as a boon to start fresh or maybe take a little break from the daily schedule.

I don't have contact information for so many of our friends. So I want you to send the invitation on my behalf. This is the biggest help I need from you. I am very excited to meet everyone and want to know what they are doing in their daily life and how they look these days.

I am attaching the invitation to this letter, including the date and location.

Yours faithfully

Aman Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt. You clearly state the kind of celebration you want to organise, which is a small cocktail party for your class and friends. You explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way, mentioning that it will act as a boon to take a break from your busy work schedule and help you reconnect with your old self. Furthermore, you effectively describe the help you need by explaining that you lack the contact information for many friends and asking Lovepreet to send the invitations on your behalf. All bullet points are fully addressed with appropriate tone and relevant details, fully satisfying the requirements of a General Training letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the opening establishes the context and personal feelings, the second paragraph explains the event and the motivation behind it, and the final paragraphs outline the requested help and closing details. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, though referencing and transitions could be smoother in places. For instance, starting multiple sentences with 'So' or 'And' slightly affects the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas clearly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate and mostly natural range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter to a friend. Phrases like 'unbelievable that it's been 10 years already', 'work as a boon', and 'take a little break from the daily schedule' communicate your ideas effectively. However, there are some repetitive patterns and slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'our friend circle' instead of 'our circle of friends', and repeating the phrase 'these days' too closely. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is more than sufficient to convey your message clearly without impeding comprehension.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms. You successfully handle subordinate clauses, such as 'Life keeps us so busy that we forget the people closest to us' and 'I am planning to organise an event like a small cocktail party for our whole class, which includes our friend circle.' There are a few minor grammatical lapses and awkward phrasings, such as 'our college year' instead of 'our college years', but these do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and well-structured, reflecting a solid command of basic and intermediate grammar.
