Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Payal,
Hope you are fine!
I am writing this letter to discuss our college reunion ten-year anniversary. It is been ten years since we left the college and I am planning to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all classmates from college and spend some quality time together.
As you are aware, everybody is busy with their hectic schedules so difficult to stay connected these days. Therefore, this event will allow everyone to meet their old friends and remember their old memories as well as spend some time together. Additionally, we can discuss about our careers and can make a good network together for future.
I need your support with this event, please try to obtain contact information of all the friends so that we can send them an invite of this program. Also, help me to decide the venue for this event.
I will wait for your reply.
Your friend,
Gam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. Gam clearly states the event being organised, which is a ten-year college reunion anniversary, explains why this is a good idea by pointing out how hectic schedules make it difficult to stay connected, and describes the specific help needed from the friend, namely obtaining contact information and deciding on a venue. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and the purpose is maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant and adequately supported, meeting all the requirements for a Band 7 performance under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the greeting and purpose, to the explanation of the event's benefits, and finally to the request for assistance. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Additionally', and 'Also' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the letter, ensuring that the reader can easily follow the sequence of thoughts. Overall, this reflects a solid Band 7 level for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate clearly and with some flexibility. Expressions like 'hectic schedules', 'quality time', and 'contact information' demonstrate an adequate control of common and semi-formal language suitable for a friendly letter. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'It is been ten years' (grammar overlap) and 'discuss about our careers' (unnecessary preposition). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for successful communication without impeding the reader, it lacks the precision and wider range of less common lexical items required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Gam demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As you are aware, everybody is busy with their hectic schedules so difficult to stay connected these days.' There are some noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as the tense slip 'It is been ten years' instead of 'It has been', and the omission of a subject in 'so difficult to stay connected'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors exist, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
