Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sharon
It's been ten years since I left college. I'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all my friends and classmates from college, therefore I thought, I should write this letter to you.
I'm planning a themed party celebration and dinner at the restaurant. All the guests are required to be wearing their graduation gowns and extra clothes should be brought because we are going to play some mini games after the ceremony.
We haven't seen each other for quite some time that's why I thought this will be a great way to celebrate. This will encourage us to have some quality time to engage and chit chat about how life is treating us.
The only help I need as of now are chairs and tables for deco. I was wondering if you can give me a hand on that area.
I am so excited to see you at the party and can't wait to see the deco that you are going to grace is with!
Kind regards
Rudaviro

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated the kind of celebration you want to organise by writing, 'I'm planning a themed party celebration and dinner at the restaurant.' You explained why it is a good way to celebrate by noting that 'this will be a great way to celebrate' and allowing everyone to 'engage and chit chat about how life is treating us.' Finally, you described the help needed for the event by mentioning, 'The only help I need as of now are chairs and tables for deco.' The tone is appropriately semi-formal to informal for a letter to a college friend, and all parts of the prompt are fully and clearly addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing the prompt points, and a polite sign-off. You used some basic cohesive devices such as 'therefore', 'that's why', and pronoun referencing ('This will encourage us'). However, paragraphing could be improved slightly, as some paragraphs are quite brief and single-sentence statements, such as 'The only help I need as of now are chairs and tables for deco.' Despite this, the progression of ideas is clear throughout, and the reader can easily follow the purpose and details of your message.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a social letter, using phrases like 'themed party celebration', 'graduation gowns', and 'mini games'. There are a few slightly awkward word choices or colloquialisms, such as using 'deco' twice as an abbreviation for decorations, and 'grace is with' instead of 'grace us with'. However, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and appropriately for a General Training Task 1 letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'All the guests are required to be wearing their graduation gowns and extra clothes should be brought because we are going to play some mini games after the ceremony.' There are a few minor grammatical slips and punctuation issues, such as a comma splice in the first paragraph ('...with all my friends and classmates from college, therefore I thought, I should write...') and the preposition error 'help... on that area' instead of 'help... with that area'. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and you maintained good control over basic structures.
