Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sarah

I hope you are doing well. I am really happy to tell you that I am organising an event to celebrate an anniversary with all my friends as it has been ten year since we completed our graduation.

I wanted to setup a bachelor party for all my friends, where they can enjoy playing different games and dancing. Moreover there will be a variety of food and drinks with both vegetarian and non-veg options.

I think its really benefical to organise this party as we all meet with eachother after so long, and can have some break from daily routine. We can talk about how everyone's life is going, and can spend a quality time by having so much fun.

Well, I was thinking about to invite you first so i can have some help in organising this event. Moreover, it reduces my stress of doing all work alone and you are in connection with all the classmates which will make my work easier as how to organise this event according to what they interested in.

Best Wishes

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You state that you want to organise a bachelor party to celebrate a ten-year college graduation anniversary. You explain why this is a great idea, noting that it provides a chance to catch up after a long time, take a break from the daily routine, and have fun. Additionally, you clearly describe the help you need by asking Sarah to co-organise the event, reduce your stress, and assist in matching the plans with classmates' interests. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout. All parts of the prompt are fully and clearly addressed, showing good communicative purpose and fulfilling the General Training letter-writing conventions effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle paragraphs dealing with specific prompt requirements, and an appropriate sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas, such as the event details in the second paragraph and the benefits in the third. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'where', and 'Well' to connect your thoughts. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with 'and can'. Overall progression is clear, and the reader can easily follow your message from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and functional phrases, such as 'daily routine', 'quality time', and 'reduce my stress'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as writing 'setup' (as a noun, it should be 'set up' as a verb or 'organise') and 'ten year' (which should be plural 'years'). Furthermore, describing a ten-year college reunion as a 'bachelor party' is contextually unusual and slightly unnatural for a general college anniversary celebration. Despite these limitations, the range is sufficient for the task and communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses ('where they can enjoy playing...') and subordinate clauses ('as we all meet with eachother...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present. For instance, you omitted the plural 's' in 'ten year', missed an apostrophe in 'its' ('it is'), and wrote 'thinking about to invite' which should be 'thinking of inviting'. There are also minor preposition and article issues, such as 'by having so much fun' and 'according to what they interested in' (missing 'are'). Nevertheless, these errors are non-systematic and do not impede overall communication, placing your grammar securely at a competent level.
