Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Avani,

I am writing this letter for seeking your help in order to celebrate ten years of anniversary since we left our college.

I know it has been ten years already and we need to celebrate this milestones along with our other classmates. To make this event more remarkable, I would like to send hand-made letter to our batch-mates and also our teachers as we know the importance of letter in back era, when there was not much influence of social media.

Furthermore, I would like to make special entries for each person in very unique way along with their signature steps, where we will be having lots of fun. To add on that, there should be DJ, food courts and also dancing area, where people can become students again and forget all their stress for a while.

Let me know your thoughts too as we are going to organise this event together and will make it more remarkable for each and every person who will be over there to go back in era of golden days.

with love,

Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task prompt. First, she clearly states the kind of event she wishes to organise, proposing a ten-year college anniversary reunion featuring hand-made invitations, special entries with signature steps, a DJ, food courts, and a dancing area. Second, she explains why this would be good, noting that it will allow attendees to become students again and escape their daily stress. Third, she describes the help needed by directly addressing Avani at the beginning and end of the letter, inviting her thoughts and asking to organise the event together. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout, matching the requirements of General Training Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear logical organisation, moving smoothly from the opening purpose of the letter to the specific event details, and finally concluding with a call to action for joint organisation. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct paragraphs for the introduction, the event details regarding invitations and activities, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'To add on that', and 'Let me know your thoughts' are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common phrases such as 'batch-mates', 'signature steps', and 'golden days'. While there are a few word choice and prepositional inaccuracies—such as 'writing this letter for seeking' instead of 'writing this letter to seek', and 'ten years of anniversary' rather than 'tenth anniversary'—these errors do not impede communication. The tone remains natural and friendly, demonstrating an adequate lexical resource to convey personal ideas effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional ideas, such as 'where we will be having lots of fun' and 'who will be over there to go back in era'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, including 'in back era' instead of 'back in the era' and missing articles like 'in very unique way'. However, these errors do not impede overall comprehension, and the majority of sentences are understandable, supporting a solid Band 6 performance.
