Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Harman,

I planned a event to celebrate the anniversary of ten years of passing the college. I want to invite you and all our other classmates from college, because you are my best friend i am writing this first letter for you. i planned a event like a party there will be food and DJ for music, we will enjoy there properly like we did enjoy our time when we was in college.

This will be good to celebrate because we all friends and our classmates were never met after we pass out the college. Now this will be best time to meet with everyone and celebrate this event and enjoy the day.

But i need your one help to organise this event, the place where i will organising this event there i need proper decoration with flowers and everything and you know many of them, can you suggest me the best one who will design all the event perfectly. So then our event will become best and memorable.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all the bullet points required by the prompt. First, the letter clearly states the kind of celebration event being organised, specifically mentioning a party with food and a DJ for music. Second, it explains why this format is ideal by noting that the friends have not met since graduation and this is the best time to reunite and reminisce. Finally, it describes the specific help needed, asking Harman to recommend a decorator for the venue. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly, and the purpose of the letter is fully realized. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid band score for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter exhibits a basic logical flow and addresses all prompts in a sequential manner. However, coherence is hindered by poor paragraphing, as the text contains unconventional spacing and indentation that disrupts the visual and structural organization. Additionally, cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive and mechanical, relying heavily on basic conjunctions like 'and' and 'because' rather than a smoother variety of transition words. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'many of them' when referring to decorators. While the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the main message, the mechanical cohesion and flawed paragraph structure prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for a simple social letter, but it remains basic and repetitive. The candidate relies on common, everyday terms like 'nice', 'good', and 'enjoy'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as saying 'passing the college' instead of 'graduating from college', 'never met after we pass out' instead of 'haven't met since we graduated', and 'need your one help' instead of 'need a favor'. While these inaccuracies do not impede communication, they reflect a limited lexical range and prevent the score from rising into the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable grammatical errors, such as 'I planned a event' (article error), 'when we was in college' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'where i will organising this event there i need' (run-on sentence with redundant phrasing). Capitalization of the pronoun 'i' is also missing throughout the text. While the meaning is generally clear despite these errors, the frequency of basic grammatical slips keeps the score at this level.
